Parts-express.com for replacement speakers.

I picked up a pair of my uncles old no-name floors (10"+4.25") where the mid/sub had rotted. $23.00 later, two brand new 100watt 10's to rock my living room. Old JVC stereo, no digital, I picked up from a buddy upgrading his setup, powers them just fine.

Forget the high-end stuff...your playing 16-bit sound! No bang for buck there unless you plan to upgrade to a HT later. Look for a 2-way 50-150 watt pair, keep it simple. Also, what is your budget?

I always recommend a high power 150watt or so stereo system at minimum because it punches real hard, but surround sound units are actually a very nice option. Almost all Genesis games take advantage of Dolby Surround believe it or not.

Some notable titles that make excellent use of this are: Thunder Force IV, all Sonic Games, the Streets of Rage series, Rocket Knight Adventures, anything from Capcom or that has a Q-Sound logo, 90% of all Sega CD games and every 32X game, etc... etc...

The Genesis uses a technique called phase shifting that modulates the signal in and out of certain frequencies. This tricks the amp into playing the sounds in each of the appropriate speakers. In other words it's a debranded and non-licensed use of the original Dolby Surround system or as we know it by today, Dolby Pro-Logic.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Wow, I'm sure getting some good advice here. Your input, Mod_Man_Extreme, sounds especially in-depth.

My budget, by the way, has no particular limit on this. I just don't want to spend any money I don't have to, and I don't think it should be hard to get optimum speakers for older video games at an affordable price.

I've seen mentions of surround sound in some of my Genesis equipment documentation. My model 1 Sega CD manual, I think. I've wondered a little about that, and rarely hear it mentioned anywhere.

Is the Genesis the only machine of its time that ever does that?

Got a pair of these bad boys:

and Polk Cs10 to flesh out my surround system, didn't break the bank and I've been quite happy with them. Good luck, either way.

Polks from Newegg are a good deal. I was looking for some sound last year and I was just about to pick some Monitor60's up, but I found a cheaper alternative(free Cerwin Vega VS 100s!) . Keep your eye on them at Newegg b/c they have weekly sales. Also, troll AVSForums for ideas but remember, they're audiophiles over there.

You get what you pay for.

was wondering if something like this would work instead of a receiver. 5.1 is 5 speakers plus sub right?

would digital LaserDiscs still sound good using this even if I do not have 5.1 speakers, what about the 2 in the TV and maybe two more separate ones. With this could I just hook the front right and left front output directly into the inputs on my tv and not have a center and sub, would it still sound correct. Would this also work speaker wise. It is not a very big room it is in.
