It sounds like you need to play Persona 3 FES and Persona 4. Personally, I found these games much more enjoyable.
I've heard nothing but good things about them but I just can't get into the SMT games. I have trouble looking past the super anime high school teenager thing. Maybe someday I'll give one of them an honest shot.
SMT Nocturne on the ps2 was extremely dark and could be just the story of horror and misery you are looking for with the gameplay true to the series.

Play games yourself Mr. Popo to form your own opinion. :P

But seriously, especially JRPG's thesedays... they tend to get slammed all the time.

Lost Odyssey feels like what FFX would have been on the PSX, very comparable to FF7-9 in terms of design and whatnot. I've been playing it for like two years, it's weird I know, but I also find it easy to go back too... I dunno why I just keep getting busier with other games or something. But I'm up to the 3rd disc and it has been great stuff.

The Last Remnant I liked a lot honestly and did just about everything in it.

There's also Star Ocean 4. Haven't played it myself though.

Well I quite like horror and misery Bradtemple87 so I may have to look into that one.

JC48573, were you looking into 360-exclusive RPGs only? If not, you may also want to look into Nier and Enchanted Arms. There's also Monster Hunter Frontier, but that's Japan-only.

Record of agarest war is an enjoyable strategy rpg, the 360 version is on a disc. There is also divinity 2 the dragon knight saga, which is very old in style, but I had a hard time completing it.

I am looking forward to play jrpgs mostly, which is the very reason I ordered a 360. I can't seem to get into Mass Effect at the moment or any of Bioware games. I am still waiting for the 360 to arrive along with some games. These are the games I've picked up so far:

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon (Sealed copy for only 5.99), Dead Rising (I know, it's not really rpg), Infinite Undiscovery

I was able to get a boxed 360 + kinect console for 185. I am thinking of selling the kinect as I don't have any need for it atm. I actually bought xbox for 2 games mainly and that's Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia.

Well you will certainly be pleased with Lost Odyssey, its one of the better JRPGs on the current gen systems. Enjoyable game play, interesting story, a great Final Fantasy feel, etc.
