How do ads work?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

There's a newer type of add that's been championed by Google. Various businesses pay Google money to associate their adds with keywords in search queries. So your first couple of results are paid advertisements. It monetizes better than click-based ad revenue because now it works more like traditional TV ads.

I don't see those. I think my adblocker is too smart.

Well, I prefer DuckDuckGo over Google because of Google torrent censorship anyway. But when I used to use Google, the advertisements that were in the form of search results never showed up.

   That is pure genius. If only there were a way to do that on DVDs that lockout the remote buttons.

I don't block the ads here, its only on the Front page and in the Guides. The sites I hate are the hogs like IGN or YouTube that throw an ad right up front, BEFORE you can read a review or watch a given video.

But if we dont watch the ads its like we are stealing TV!

Seriously though I dont get how much money changes hands over banners on websites, I've never bought anything from them because I still dont trust the companies that are advertising.

I dont use ad blockers though, cant see the point. I mean I go to pirate bay and there are banners on the page, a pop up advertising that poker site and on the torrent details page there is that annoying 'download' button that is an ad for some other site. Out of all the sites that I go to Pirate Bay is the worst offender but compared to years back and all those circle jerks and whatever, thats NOTHING. Just dont pay them any attention.

I remember at Uni I looked at the phenomenon of Banner Blindness, where most people had learned to block out adverts to the point that they didnt perceive them at all. Yet children generally failed to be able to seperate them from the content of the site that they were looking at. Out of interest, are there any people here that grew up with early exposure to the net and its onslaught of ads and how do you cope with the ads in general now?

Thats what I love about XBMC on my oXBox - it lets me skip the unskipable!

I think that the Freedom of information doesn't mean that information is free. I take the free membership here as a courtesy, not a right.

And just because someone doesn't out right ask you to do something that helps them doesn't mean that it's wrong to do it anyway.

I'm actually in the same boat as Inazuma here. I have never clicked an ad here but I buy things from the Racket store a few times a year - usually in favor of buying the same product from some where else. I prefer my money to go to this site.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Just rip them. Handbrake is free, crossplatform, and ridiculously easy to use. DVDs should be ripped immediately after purchase and then put into storage, never to see the light of day again.

Just because one does not contribute financially does not mean one does not contribute. This is a completely free community -- without members there would be no community and therefore no potential of ad revenue to argue about. The contributions of those who keep the site active are just as valuable as those who click on links, as one begets the other.

To say that one is freeloading, as the other fellow did -- there really are no words.

sure that's true, but if there's no $ to pay for the domain name, webspace, etc then we would all have to go bicker about it somewhere else.

Oh crap. I was just looking at the Sony Hds the other day with the Google Browser built in. Gee I wonder where that will lead.
