I've been reading a lot about ad-based web businesses, and was really surprised to see how gloomy prospective ad revenue is made out to be considering how many pages seem to stay afloat from it.
Thinking about it, I don't think I've EVER clicked on an advertisement on purpose. Occasionally I'll accidentally click one of those flashing banners or ads that look like they're part of the page themselves, or a pop-up if it shows up right as I'm clicking, but I never follow through with any of the offers once I'm redirected. Even ads for items I might be interested in I avoid because of how many are misleading or scams.
Literally even my grandparents - who still use AOL to get online - avoid ads. So...who does click on ads?
*edited out badly worded stuff about ad blocking*
How do ads work?

Re: Who clicks on ads?
FYI, blocking ads isn't exactly cool in my book. Look at the site you're on now. It has ads. Blocking them is kind of like telling Racket that you don't think he deserves to make money off this site. Just saying.
Why do people act like it's hard to "just not look"?

Re: Who clicks on ads?
I don't block ads, I just don't click on them. I could have worded that better - I probably shouldn't have mentioned ad blocking because it's not really relevant to my question, just kind of related.
I promise I'm not just saying that, there was an "angry birds" ad on the front page a few seconds ago

Re: Who clicks on ads?
I click ads on sites I like because it gives the maintainers money. Like a website? Click on ads.

Don't you have to follow through and buy something most of the time though? Or is it just clicking?jeffro11 wrote:I click ads on sites I like because it gives the maintainers money. Like a website? Click on ads.

I've clicked on an Amazon ad that was advertising the Chromebook because I wanted to know what they were charging. Other than that I usually ignore them.

Re: How do ads work?
it depends. There's different kinds of ads/agreements.
A web banner or banner ad is a form of advertising on the World Wide Web. This form of online advertising entails embedding an advertisement into a web page. It is intended to attract traffic to a website by linking to the website of the advertiser. The advertisement is constructed from an image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), JavaScript program or multimedia object employing technologies such as Java, Shockwave or Flash, often employing animation, sound, or video to maximize presence. Images are usually in a high-aspect ratio shape (i.e. either wide and short, or tall and narrow) hence the reference to banners. These images are usually placed on web pages that have interesting content, such as a newspaper article or an opinion piece. Affiliates earn money usually on a CPC (cost per click) basis. For every unique user click on the ad, the affiliate earns money.

I block ads here and everywhere else, and I am not ashamed to admit it. Too many of them steal focus, play music, video, or do other annoying things. Website creators don't always have control over this content, so I will block all by default.

I can understand things like pop-ups being annoying. But I think it's a shame that sites people go to daily aren't bringing in the revenue they deserve because of ad-blocking.dsheinem wrote:I block ads here and everywhere else, and I am not ashamed to admit it. I also fast forward past ads on shows I like and trailers on DVDs of movies I enjoy.noiseredux wrote:I can understand things like pop-ups being annoying.
