Except that DVD playback is NOT a system seller in this day and age. Same with a proper web browser. Does anyone honestly do web browsing from their console in anything more than a novelty fashion? Really, the two things that Nintendo didn't do so well on this generation was online support and the shop. I am confident they won't make the same mistake with the Wii U. They might not make it exactly the way you want, but it'll be perfectly functional and will let you do everything you need to if you want to play with friends online and easily find a good new game. Good online gaming functionality IS a system seller. The other stuff you mentioned isn't.
It's not a system seller. Just like a car having a radio isn't a car seller. But you still expect it to be included. Ok, you pay a lot more money for a car. But I pay a lot more money than you guys for a console as well. 250€ (the price for a 3DS) is 357$. Why shouldn't I get freaking DVD playback with my 357$? The hardware is there, why shouldn't the software be there as well?
And really, with the Wii U's new controller, don't you think a lot of people would like to use it to browse the internet from their cough? I want to buy a mac mini, so I can have a small device connected to my TV, to browse the internet and watch movies. Why shouldn't my console be able to do that? It's not that I'm demanding better hardware, that can jack up the price of the console a lot. I'm demanding better software. If you divide the cost of developing the software, by the million of units they'll make, it really doesn't cost them a lot.
Again, why should it have all of these things? It's a portable video game system. The important things it needs to have are to be able to play video games and to have online functionality to let people play videogames with other people. In fact, your iPhone argument is one of the key reasons it DOESN'T have all that stuff. People already have their smart phones for things like an internet browser and an MP3 player. Or they just have a regular MP3 player that does movies. An internet browser on a portable device without 3G isn't worth much, so any non-phone device is out for that. All that's left is the app store, and there's a reason Nintendo doesn't have one of those. It's the same reason the PSN only has releases from actual game studios and not the asshole three houses down from you.
Again, I'm asking for better software for my device. I'm asking for more options. Just cause I'm not going to use it, doesn't mean the software being there isn't nice.
Ok, you guys don't care about that stuff. Good for you. But I care. I don't see why I can't ask for more stuff for my money. Why should I take Nintendo's corporate line for granted? That people only care for a game's machine. And before the iphone, people only cared for a phone. Before video games, people only cared for computers to do accounting. These machines can do soooooo many things. Why should what we do with our machines be limited?
If Nintendo doesn't want to pay for the software, for Blue-ray/DVD playback, or for a proper browser, they should just allow a 3rd party to release the necessary software for it in their app store.
And BTW an app store is an escellent idea. The problem is that Apple's quality control is crap, and the lowest price range is too low. I still think the PS minis line is a good idea, but unfortunately when 80% of the game line is iphone and flash ports, at 3 times the price, people skip the entire content, and that makes even the gems among them suffer
