Would've been quicker to write that, probably. Thanks for info, kids. Good times.

I realize that Parasite Eve is a cross between turn-based and real-time, but it's too awesome not to mention. Fights go in turns, but it's real-time between your turns (you can run around and dodge attacks).

This game was decent, but I don't think I totally got into it... I was spoiled very heavily by playing Vagrant Story before it I'd say. Which I can also highly recommend for this thread.

Dark Spire (DS) is a pretty sweet, untypical turn based RPG. It's like an 80's style rpg, its really cool.

The games do have a lot of similarity. I was still able to have fun with both. I actually enjoyed the early story of Parasite Eve. Vagrant Story starts off really slow and lonely (which is its purpose, but it can make the game hard to get into at first)

Both of them are great, but I would have to agree that Vagrant Story wins it out. However, Parasite Eve is less traditional for a ps1 Square game than Vagrant Story IMO

Square used to be so crazy cool. Hard to believe how many different rpgs they put out on that console.

Odin Sphere is pretty strange for an rpg, but really fun. Pretty much and SMT game has a very different feel from most rpgs too.

Took the answer outta my mouth. Fallout 1 & 2 (PC) was said by isiolia. alienjesus picked out the Mario RPG games.

I'm going to also suggest Shadowrun (SNES/GEN/SCD) which are three different games depending on the console; I prefer the SNES point-n-click adventure-RPG, Live-A-Live (SNES); a fan-translated multi-chapter RPG, Metal Max Returns; another fan-translated SNES RPG that remakes an old NES game that resembles Fallout with tanks, either the Sailor Moon or Ranma (SNES) fan-translated RPGs, and Robotrek (SNES); a short "beginners' RPG".

Then there are tactical games. The Jagged Alliance (PC/DS) games, Faselei! (NGPC), Front Mission (SNES/PS/PS2) series, Advance Wars (GBA/DS) series, Sakura Wars (SAT/DC/PS2/Wii), etc.

And card games. (Dear gods, I've logged hundreds of hours into NGPC's three SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash games.)

Also, I would suggest Final Fantasy Legend III (GB), while sticking with Fantasy and plays like a mainstream Final Franchise title, is centered around time-traveling and cyborgs. (And the entire FFL franchise uses a non-traditional approach to high fantasy.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.
