I'm pretty sure Samus is considered a sex symbol because you could see her in a bikini at the end of the first game.
I dunno, kinda started down the wrong path if they didn't want her to be seen that way
To be honest though, I never even think about who is in the suit while I am playing. I just like the game mechanics. I'm talking about Super Metroid though, not Other M. I have not yet had a chance to play that.
Still seems to me that they were kinda going in the "sex symbol" idea in the first place, but the graphics weren't as good. I mean, look at her pose when she dies. Looks like she's showin us her "O" face

Re: re: lisalover's signature
That's the whole point. It ISN'T contradicting what was shown in previous games. The closest you can claim is that there was no PTSD in previous Ridley fights. Except half the games didn't have cutscenes at all, and in other games she was expecting to run in to him. In Other M as far as she could tell she'd blasted him to space dust and so his sudden appearance triggered it.AppleQueso wrote:Wait wait wait a second.
...you mean the whole "OTHER M SUCKS WHY IS SAMUS TAKING ORDERS FROM A MAN!?" thing isn't just a strawman? I thought most people hated the portrayal because she was made overly whiny and it contradicted what we were shown in previous games, not because they thought she should be some kinda misandrist symbol.

It just occured to me that this stuff is exactly why Miyamoto steadfastly refuses to allow Link to have any more characterization than he's always had.

Considering the outrage at him saying like 1 thing in Windwaker, I can't blame him. Lol.AppleQueso wrote:It just occured to me that this stuff is exactly why Miyamoto steadfastly refuses to allow Link to have any more characterization than he's always had.
These games get crap like old classic bands do whenever they come out with a new album. These games are so classic that someone will always be upset when they make changes, and and others will be upset with the lack of change.

I don't think most Metroid fans really wanted much of a change in the formula at all, especially towards a more narrative direction. I remember one of the big criticisms of Fusion was the fact that it let story drive your progression through the game... sound familiar?dunpeal2064 wrote:Considering the outrage at him saying like 1 thing in Windwaker, I can't blame him. Re: re: lisalover's signature
A note, Lara Croft was not meant to be a "sex symbol", her huge breasts were a programming error that the developing team decided to keep, much to the creator's chagrin.brunoafh wrote:I don't think I'd go as far as calling Samus an intentional "sex symbol", like Lara Croft or something.
So it's quasi-intentional.
No, sadly it isn't =/AppleQueso wrote:...you mean the whole "OTHER M SUCKS WHY IS SAMUS TAKING ORDERS FROM A MAN!?" thing isn't just a strawman? I have seen far more people complaining because she is a whiny woman than because she is whiny.

Even so, I think part of the point is that it shouldn't be wrong for her to show weakness. Weakness is part of being human and the more realistically a video game character is portrayed the easier it is to sympathize with that character. That's like rule number one of good character and plot design.o.pwuaioc wrote:Sounds weak to me.MrPopo wrote:That's the whole point. It ISN'T contradicting what was shown in previous games. Yes, because her characterization was incredibly strong in previous games.o.pwuaioc wrote:Sounds weak to me.MrPopo wrote:That's the whole point. I don't remember the character being frozen and pummeled by enemies in Super Metroid.MrPopo wrote:Yes, because her characterization was incredibly strong in previous games.o.pwuaioc wrote:Sounds weak to me.MrPopo wrote:That's the whole point.
