You can use the PSX to play all the imports. The grey PS1 is the easiest one to add a Mod Chip. The smaller white PSOne can be modded but the solder points are smaller. The PS2 is even tighter, but its reserved only for PS2 games installed on the hard drive. Flip Top allows installing of imports without a Mod Chip.

@ Mechblue The parallel port carts are solid. usually the fail is because of the connector contacts on the cart.

PS1 Game carts allow viewing game videos directly, among other tricks.

Good to know. I'll take another look at it and see if I can get it to work again.

Do the parallel ports make them more valuable? Because I have one but the video output port doesn't work.

Not sure, but I consider the best model is the 7000 series. It has the Parallel Port, clean FMV playback and the Soundscope CD player.

Ya know, I see PS1s all the time at thrift clothing stores for very cheap. I never really checked to see if any of them were SCPH 1001. I have two PS1s that I'm never going to use. One is modded to play burnt games.

The only ones really worth a consistent amount are the 1001's. The rest its sort of a toss of a coin if some one feels like paying ya more than $15. :? I believe the PSONE systems are worth even less.

A 1001 is an easy sell on ebay for $20-$25. I have about 4-5 sitting in a closet ready to sell. I swapped the PSONE drive/eye in to them because the old original ones were worn out and busted. Should give these ones some more life. :D

The original PSX is an extremely capable audiophile CD player. Some models more than others, but if you're into hi-fi, you should definitely do some googling.

My modded PS1 happily sits on the shelf collecting dust. But I still keep it around. I never know when I may want to play some of those obscure burns.

There are two reasons they are so inexpensive:

1. One of the most popular consoles of all time. I would assume nearly everyone owned a PS1 in the late 90's.

2. Every Playstation 2 plays PS1 games.

It only has different jacks in the back, I have two, one is the Japanese version. This has been gone over many times before, no difference in Audio performance.

Where's Modman !

I don't know if this is sarcastic or not. I'm guessing if the PSONE doesn't have the problem then it could fix it on for the 1001. But I'm not sure if theres a difference in the processing power or if the skipping issue was in the optical unit.

What game has a FMV I could test it on? I have a non-modified 1001 to compare with the fixed one.

I agree, very little difference over a standard stereo receiver. Although much cheaper.

Maybe there's a bit of a difference in video/audio quality coming directly from the three ports versus the standard Sony a/v cable? I doubt it's a drastic difference though.

Has anyone done a real test of audio / video quality using the RCA ports versus the a/v cable with RCA plugs? I guess there isn't really much of a scientific way to test it..
