Really? What GH games for the PS1 did this? What bugs or glitches were fixed?
- Devil May Cry 3 GH became a special edition with improved difficulty/level balancing with additional content.
- Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex GH has the loading times improved over the original.
- DragonBall Z Budokai 3 GH has an unlockable bonus to hear the original Japanese voiceovers.
- Gran Turismo 2 GH has a bug fixed that allows you to achieve 100%.
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance GH contains an extra disc with special bonus features.
- Silent Hill 2 GH has additional bonus content previously exclusive to other regions, along with improved graphics.
- Twisted Metal Black GH adds an extra disc for online not present in the original version.
- Virtua Fighter 4 GH is 'Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution' and has improved graphics and more content.
I know I'm mixing PS1 and PS2 games, but you get the idea. Many games had their artwork changed for the GH release -- for example, check out Gran Turismo 4 black label vs Gran Turismo 4 GH. The GH version has a complete manual (unlike the original), in addition to a back cover with different text and images.
The only PS1 game you mentioned was Gran Turismo 2. And your claim isn't entirely accurate. According to giantbomb:
When Gran Turismo 2 originally shipped, it was discovered that players could not obtain a 100% completion ranking. Polyphony Digital and Sony soon discovered this and re-released the game with minor changes to allow for 100% completion. They also started a program where players could send in their "Simulation" discs and be provided with an updated copy. Soon after the program began, however, they stopped requiring the original discs be returned, and began sending out discs to anyone who completed the brief process for obtaining a replacement.
Although it was never officially revealed why players could not obtain 100% completion, it was widely suspected that a last minute decision to remove drag racing from the game caused this. Drag racing had been discussed several times during the development as a new feature. Additionally, there was a single car with 1001 horsepower that could be earned as an event reward. It was tuned to have incredibly fast acceleration and straight line performance, leading many gamers to be believe it was, in fact, a drag car.
From that description, there are certainly black label versions of the game that allow for 100%, meaning that they didn't change anything between the last run of the black label game and the greatest hits version. Still, an interesting bit of trivia. I wonder how many other games may have had multiple "black label" runs with adjusted code.
So I'll ask again - are there
any Greatest Hits games for the
PS1 that offer something not found in a black label version?
