Once Sega-16 is back up, I'm guessing you were thinking of this?

you guys, I know the genres are vague. That's on purpose. Remember, this is brainstorming. Think of this like that thing that psychiatrists do. They say the word "airplane" and you say the first thing that pops into yr head. Even if you say "shoe" it's not a wrong answer. So if I say SHOOTER some of you will think of shmups, some run-n-guns, some will think of FPS. Doesn't matter. Just say with you think of. :)

First thing that pops in my head?

Beat-em-up
Streets of Rage series - More than any other beat'em up this series somehow keeps constantly re-emerging in the gaming collective consciousness with the Streets of Rage Remake, legendary soundtrack that keeps getting remixed to this day, and the Beats of Rage mods that keep flooding the net.
Castle Crashers(THE best 2d beat'em up of the past few years)
Dynasty Warriors series - If you live in Japan, beat'em up = DW games
Fighting - The versus series, the Mortal Kombat series, Darkstalkers series
Platformer - Mario, Sonic, random Disney games
Shooter - Treasure games(Take your pick), Contra series, Metal Slug series, PC snobs  No offense guys, but that's what I thought of when I thought of first person and third person shooters
Action - Too broad, my mind draws a blank. This isn't really a genre
Adventure - Also vague, but my thinks of Zelda, Tomb Raider, and random survival horror games
Driving - Mario Kart games, Ridge Racer series, Crazy Taxi, Crash Team Racing
Puzzle - Lucasarts PC games, Crush, Braid, Portal
Rhythm - PaRappa, Space Channel 5, Bust a Groove, Guitaroo Man
Simulation - Um, the Sims  Harvest Moon, Viva Pinata, japanese dating sims,
RPG - Final Fantasy series, Bioware games, Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, Nippon Ichi games
Sports - Smackdown wrestling games, Fire Pro wrestling games, SSX Tricky, NBA Jam, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Sega Soccer Slam
Strategy - Starcraft, Kingdom Under Fire Crusaders, Pikmin

this is actually a super interesting point, so thank you for that. I've certainly played SOR, and it stands as probably my favorite non-Turtles Beatemup to this day. I have always thought it much better than Final Fight. But reading yr post it occurred to me that I still hadn't really investigated the world of BOR mods. Considering the huge flood of them out there, it's not a stretch to call BOR an important game, at least in the world of homebrew dev and ultimately the kind of scene that Sony seems to want to create with their LittleBigPlanet or Mod Nation Racers, etc. So yeah, good call. Thanks for thinking outside the inside box. :)

I was waiting for this to pop back up myself... well now it's back up and I'm not sure if this is the article I had in mind, but it definitely works. Totally looks like the Genesis had the SNES beat big time when it comes to shmups.

Happy to help. There's some fun stuff out there like a BOR version of the game Nightslashers. I think it was called Nightslashers X. Have you tried Streets of Remake V5? I know we had a thread for that. It's pretty impressive, though annoyingly tough in some sections. It would have been interesting to see what response it would have gotten if by some miracle this thing could have been an Xbox Live Arcade release

I am amazed by the strong online presence Streets of Rage has had over the years. Not to mention the positive reaction Streets of Rage 2 got from game reviewers when it came out on Xbox Live Arcade. This series just seems to have major staying power despite having never jumped into the modern world with a 3D installment
