help me brainstorm some classic games

Post by noiseredux »

Conversation with Flake and DSH last night has me thinking about CLASSIC games that I've missed out on. For each genre listed below, name me the first 3 games you think of as being synonymous with said genre. The first games you'd think I was a videogame moron for having never played. (Include which console version you'd recommend as well). Any era, any system, all brainstorming appreciated.

Beat-em-up
Fighting
Platformer
Shooter
Action
Adventure
Driving
Puzzle
Rhythm
Simulation
RPG
Sports
Strategy

Beat-em-up - Streets of Rage 2 (GEN), Final Fight (SNES is good, Sega CD is awesome), TMNTIV: Turtles in Time (SNES)
Rhythm - Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast), Guitaroo Man (PS2), idk anything else

...for some reason i'm hesitant for the other genres. I feel like just saying "Dr Mario" for puzzles or "Street Fighter II" for fighting would be too obvious, unless that's the point of the thread...

it kind of is the point. I'm looking for games that you'd be surprised that I've overlooked.

Kind of weird wording. I'm a little confused. You want games that are generally popular, but you may have over looked, or games that are a little more obscure?

Edit
The first games you'd think I was a videogame moron for having never played.
Actually, I guess this makes it clear.

haha yeah THAT. I guess I'm basically looking for "genre classics" however you want to define that. So yeah generally popular that I MYSELF happened to overlook. For instance, I had never played Tempest until Together Retro. That's definitely a classic, but I had managed to overlook it. So I guess I'm just forming lists based on WHAT ARE THE FIRST TITLES THAT POP INTO YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU THINK OF EACH GENRE?

Samurai Shodown III (Neo Geo)

Platformer
Ninja Gaiden II (NES)
Rondo of Blood (PCE)
MegaMan X4 (PSX)
Journey to Silius (NES)

Shooter
Super Star Soldier (PCE)
Lords of Thunder (PCE)
Gleylancer (GEN)
Metal Black (Saturn)

Action
Contra: Hard Corps (GEN)
Actraiser (SNES)
Alien Soldier (Gen (only on Mega Drive though))
Shinobi: Shadow Dancer (GEN)

Adventure
Shadow of the Beast (PCE)
Metal Gear 2 (MSX2, PS2 (English translation included with MGS3: Subsistence))
Snatcher (Sega CD)

Driving
Wipeout (PSX)
Road Rash (Gen)

Rhythm
Bust a Groove (PSX)
Parappa The Rappa (PSX)

RPG
Suikoden (PSX)
King's Field II (PSX)
Final Fantasy IV (PSX, PSP, or SFC)

Strategy
Gain Ground (Gen (original), PCE (enhanced port) or PS2 (great remake))
Shining Force III (Saturn)
Super Robot Taisen Gaiden: Lord of Elemental (SFC)

Man, that took a little bit of thought. I would do little commentary for each one or something but I think I've typed enough. I'd elaborate on anything if asked though.

A lot of these games you could choose the whole series, but I have picked the one that "stands out" the most to me.

Platformer: Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Galaxy

Shooter: gonna break this up...
Shmup: Gradius, DoDonPachi, Battle Garegga
FPS: Half Life 2, Quake 2, Halo

Adventure: Indiana Jones and Fate of Atlantis, Secret of Monkey Island, Myst

Driving: Gran Turismo 2, Ridge Racer, Wipeout HD

Puzzle: Tetris, Super Puzzle Fighter, Puyo Puyo

Simulation: not my thing...

RPG: Final Fantasy 7, Legend of Zelda, Lunar

Sports: NHL 94, NBA Jam, Madden (10 is my current favorite)

Strategy: Starcraft, Warcraft 3

Not sure if that helps...

indeed it does.

These lists are great. Keep em coming, don't worry about overlap or "not doing it right"... this is all good food for thought. Be as descriptive as you want. Interpret the genres as you wish.
