We had fun, but I don't think it was a game that deserved to be expanded with sequels. I just feel like there's very little in that game that isn't trumped by many other multiplayer games nowadays (especially on PC). I'd guess that's why they took the series in a different direction.
Play Rings of Fate and Echoes of Time multiplayer on the DS and then youll understand. They are solid titles - though RoF has some framerate issues.

FFCC was a great game, that those two titles expanded on the universe. The three Wii titles (two downloads and the Monster Hunter knock off) were pour showings. I will contend that the Wii titles bring the series down to average at best, but the other three titles are top tier for console/handheld multiplayer ARPGs.

It is unfair to compare Console ARPGs to PC ones. Because very few titles come close to a good game of Titans Quest

If the opportunity ever presents itself I may give them a try. Perhaps if I end up getting a second DS like I plan to in the next year or two.

I do feel like it's fair to compare PC and console ARPGs (especially when it comes to multiplayer), but I guess that's just a difference of opinion on the matter. I've never actually played Titan's Quest. I had a roommate who used to swear by it though. Watched him play a few times. Looked fun  .

Fair enough. I have always just considered them two different leagues since Console ones are more arcadey/more hack and slash, while PC ones typically have more depth.

Ah, I see where you're going with that. I can agree that they typically present two different play experiences and have different gameplay goals. In that sense a direct comparison doesn't hold as well. Truth be told I prefer the console hack and slash, but PC multi is just much easier to play with long distance friends.

When I say I'd compare them I don't exactly mean directly. I just have so much more fun playing Diablo II with my friends back home every once and awhile than I do staring at the copy of FFCC in my closet we haven't played since beating it. I would mostly compare them in multiplayer and in regards to their ease of connectivity, replayability, difficulty, and how they encourage teamplay (which FFCC really had going for it with the spell timing). Basically I feel like FFCC is a poor single player experience with a fun, but short lived and almost impossible to set up multiplayer (when you live 600 miles away from your three best friends who also don't really like each other much nowadays). I remember not liking something about the upgrade system. Whether that was about weapons or something else I cannot remember. I think I remember the ending being really lackluster for us as well, and the final boss just came down to a test of patience and repetition, more than a deep strategy.

That said, most of the ARPGs I get I'm not looking for multiplayer and tend to prefer the console tradition. I feel they usually reward the lone player better with either a more central plot, more noticeable short term power advancement, more simple mechanics, and all at a quicker pace. I didn't really see much of that in FFCC (except for the simpler mechanics) so I personally tend to judge it more against the PC tradition. That's just me though. Like I said, I had fun playing it back in the day. I might just be unjustly harsh on it looking back.

IGN made a mock up look of how the controller might look like:

and here' more rumor news:
Nintendo just can’t stop the leaks! Several video game blogs are reporting new rumors today about “Project Café” including that the new console will not use the name “Wii”. Several major developers, including Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Activision, Rockstar, EA, Namco and Ubisoft, have started working on titles for the new system. Here are some additional details (from Destructoid.com):

*Nintendo may not launch with any first party games, as it plans to really support third parties this time.
*Third party support extends to hardware, with a better storage solution being developed.
*Better download service.
*The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword may launch at the same time as Project Cafe. This could lead to another Twilight Princess situation.
*Hideo Kojima has been mentioned in conjunction with the system.
*Retro is working on a title that “everybody wants.” It’s been suggested that it could be Eternal Darkness 2.
*A Resident Evil game is in the works (when isn’t one in the works?)
*A StarFox title is being worked on.
*Grand Theft Auto V will be a Project Cafe title in addition to everything else.

I could see games having "Cafe" minigames or limited functionality (like the Pokemon move list you mentioned), but not playing full 3DS games on that touch screen.
Well right, if it played 3DS games we're talking about a whole other thing. Add that to the fact that the controller only has one screen, and its functionality is limited as is.
Precisely what I thought I was saying. I'm falling asleep at the keyboard though so I'm sure it was like "Derp derp derp THE GRAPHICS derp." Going to go take my test now before I fall asleep and miss it and fail the class.

*bangs head against the wall*

Yoshi isn't talking about the controller being able to PLAY 3DS games. He means a slot that can ACCESS data from the cartridge.

I'm still calling bullshit on the "screen in controller" thing.

I don't see why it would be bullshit though. I can't see how building a controller with a touch panel similar to the DS would be prohibitively expensive. However, I can't see it being as large as all the rumors are saying.

I think the prospects of a touch screen/screen enabled controller that functions similar to the bottom screen of a DS would be a really neat concept for a console. Its also never truly been fleshed out to a great extent. I'm wondering, of course, what Nintendo plans to do with the whole casual segment they attracted with the motion stuff.
