I blame the 64 and PS1 for that. Both introduced long videos before the game actually started. Not bad, but what happened to manuals or skippable scenes? I can't start a new game of Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time without being bored for 5 minutes just watching a story. I love how I can turn on Mario for my Game Boy or Sonic for my Genesis and just start playing.corn619 wrote:I love that I can fire up my SNES and play for 10 to 15 minutes and have fun since my gaming time is limited these days. So apparently "Retro Games" suck..........

The N64 isn't bad for that at all. Zelda: LTTP on SNES also takes a while to start at the beginning...o.pwuaioc wrote:I blame the 64 and PS1 for that. Just watched the video, stopped after he was fumbling to list shitty games and he brought up Zelda 2. I mean, seriously?
Current systems: Atari 2600[x2], NES(top loader), SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, PS2, PS2 slim, xbox, xbox 360, Turbografx-16, Game Boy Pocket, Game boy SP[x2], Nintendo DS[x2], Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Wonderswan Color, Neo Geo MVS.

They're not nearly as bad, but they can get there. And I just started up LttP to see if I had been misremembering: nope, the forced introduction is about 20 seconds of Zelda talking and 5 seconds for your uncle to walk out.Breetai wrote:The N64 isn't bad for that at all. Although I guess I see the trend. After I posted that I realized that it was Miyamoto who really promoted that, him and Square (FFIV had a really long introduction that I hated being forced to sit through).
Not that I'm complaining about the overall quality of the games - I love LttP, FFIV, and Mario 64. I just wish they had built in a skip function for the introductory sequences.
Re: So apparently "Retro Games" suck..........
Square is funny. In FF9, to get Excalibur 2 you have to reach Memoria in less than 9 hours. To do so, you have to skip all the FMV sequences, but there isn't a way to legitimately skip them. You have to open the lid of the PS1. That was so ridiculous.o.pwuaioc wrote:Although I guess I see the trend. Final Fantasy III's (err.. VI) opening was painfully long as well.o.pwuaioc wrote:They're not nearly as bad, but they can get there. My point was that I don't think it was so prevalent on the N64, probably due to the cartridge format. There are exceptions of course, like the Zelda games. I don't think Mario 64's intro was too long.
The PS1 was definitely a culprit for this, although it would be more accurate to blame the CD medium.

Point taken. I guess I was really thinking of Ocarina of Time (recently started), since I haven't started a new game of Mario 64 in a while.Breetai wrote:Final Fantasy III's (err.. VI) opening was painfully long as well.

Definitely blame discs. Play some Sega CD/Turbo(A.K.A. PC Engine) CD titles.Breetai wrote:The PS1 was definitely a culprit for this, although it would be more accurate to blame the CD medium.
There was one that had my interest for PC Engine CD that was, I think, supposed to be similar to classic Castlevania, but I couldn't even get into the game. It started with a scene at a bar where they just kept on talking(voice acting, and the game itself was a Japanese only release).....
Re: So apparently "Retro Games" suck..........
Try waiting 20 mins for a game to load on a c64 (Test Drive anyone?
). Then come back and say the cd formats are slow...

Re: So apparently "Retro Games" suck..........
But you could skip that intro (which was a credits roll) and play through the rest of it (through Narshe).Breetai wrote:Final Fantasy III's (err.. VI) opening was painfully long as well.

Long would be Final Fantasy IIus -- that airship sequence was long and uninterruptible. (I shudder to think what the PSx load-times were between CGI and game.)
