Yeah, Dune 2 is quite old (1992!) - the voices seems synthesised instead of recorded. It was still pretty cool back in the day

The graphics are pretty dated by now, but the game is really advanced for the time. I haven't been playing many FPSs lately but this is probably one of the first (if not the first) with RPG elements built into. There is a rudimentary inventory system. When someone dies, for a short while after they die they leave a sort of ethereal life energy behind which you can see and collect (thanks to the Darklight crystal now implanted in the head). This can either replenish your health or magic by a small amount, or permanently increase your max health or magic by a smaller amount.

You can pick-up guns like in normal FPSs and you can use offensive spells. You can accumulate money and buy guns in ATM-like machines that sell guns for money (hey, it's a fictional future). Your magic energy auto-recharges so it is a nice change from always worrying about money. Between the guns and spells you have some variety in offensive options. Eventually you can shoot these huge balls of energy from your fingers, which is always pretty cool for me. Then there are also magic icons who have a number of charges. You can learn spells by getting hit by them, which I think is really cool (you can also find special items that teach you the spell).

You can enter and drive vehicles (tanks and flying police cars). You can fly in the police cars, and there is also a magical item that lets you fly (but I think you can not learn this as a permanent spell). There is more plot than your usual FPS of the era (don't be expecting an award winning novel of "Half-Life" quality I guess, but probably you won't be disappointed).

Gotta love the kick-ass tune Soldiers of Fortune had for the Genesis!

Cannon Fodder's intro is objectively the best game theme ever made:

All the other games can ever hope to achieve is second place, sorry.

When the Super Nintendo Entertainment Sytem came out, one of the launch title games that really showcased the new sound capabilities was Actraiser.

The opening sounded the call to the tune of french horns, bugles, tuba, crash symbols, strings, timpani drums and more. This sound was so different from the 8-bit days that it was immediately clear that a new generation of consoles had arrived. And surely I'm not the only one who killed all the enemies on screen so I could just sit there and listen to the music. Am I right?

@Ivo: I think Ultima Underworld has it beat since it came out 1992, and Cybermage was 1995. That said thanks for the info and it looks really cool (have seen some gameplay vids and stuff), I'll have to check it out sometime. Doom-esque graphics are fine in my book.

I have to say it blew my mind recently when I realized the Actraiser, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage series, etc, among others, all share the same composer. Insane. You can usually pinpoint a signature style for a lot of composers even on the older consoles sometimes, but this guy... wow, those series right there sound absolutely nothing alike, but they're all incredible.

I'd +1 you and Ivo for the great choices, alas the forum lacks a rep system (and video previews, come to think of it)

Ripper featured Don't Fear the Reaper which made it an awesome intro back at the time. Pity I didn't like the game quite as much.

An awesome anime-style intro. Pity it's not been mentioned yet

This intro/attract mode effectively destroys the puny NTSC/PAL offering that Sega butchered back in the day

For a game to perfectly capture the essence of its source material was pretty much unheard of. That's why Blade Runner delivered the goods.

Image

Robot did quite an impressive job with Onimusha 3's CG intro.

Image

The Getaway offered quite possibly the most cinematic cutscenes when it was first released. An 18 rating did help, too.

Rockstar ripped off/paid homage to Miami Vice quite incredibly in their best GTA outing to date (IMHO).

Grim Fandango is probably the most stylish of all LucasArts games. Its opening sequence is testament to the quality awaiting unsuspecting AG fans.

I can't believe I forget to mention Cannon Fodder... I think that is one of the best intros of all time just on the music alone. The version (CD32) with the video of Sensible Software devs is arguably better:

You can just see they're just fooling around :D The part with the sheep photo is just too much...

That is a good call. I'm a big fan of UU and its sequel (I loved the rune system), but I personally don't think of it as a FPS. It has more than just a hint of RPG elements (compared to Cybermage), and although you play real time and shoot spells and missile weapons, it think about is as an RPG such as Daggerfall and other TES games. Cybermage is much more solidly an "FPS", but classifications are subjective of course.

I see. I kind of relate it to FPS's since I hear it was a huge influence for Deus Ex and System Shock 1-2, but yeah. Good points there.

Also another one came to mind... Turrican 2!!!

Always been a huge Chris Hulesbeck fan, I really wish I grew up with an Amiga or something. I still haven't even really been able to play the original Turrican's (I remember getting an Amiga emulator to work was kind of wacky). But the music is just mindblowing even on its own. His orchestrated album of the Turrican stuff is incredible as well.
