...which part did you disagree with tho?
by "heart," i should say that i mean "integrity," not mushy feeling stuff. the bands feel like they're totally manufactured and really just kind of plodding along, i don't hear any innovation within that genre. that's not to say that i can't enjoy some of it but i dislike pop-metal and pop-hardcore more than i dislike just plain old pop because, like i said, it feels like a watered down version of the kind of music that i really garner a lot of emotional attachment to.
I'm with ya on that. Artistic fiber and whatnot, I'm all for it... and that's actually a good paraphrase of what I was trying to say. At least, in a nutshell, I'd have to say that's the most driving factor as far as whether or not I like a band (regardless of genre).

To elaborate on "...but sometimes I need brutal chunky metal chaos and I don't want to hear about their feelings": I guess I speaking mostly of metal core (killswitch and company), where the vocalists (ALL of them) have 2 voices, one is the angry cliche brutal metal growling and the other is the "i can sing too i swear and i'm not just angry and hardcore but i also have feelings" voice. I hate that shit. Not only is it corny, but it pales in comparison to the uber talented vocalists who do sing about their feelings in thoughtful, poetic, artistic and capable ways. With integrity and actual vocal talent. My favorite example for that being the Deftones singer... but to cut this short of rambling... Cheers to integrity.

Yeah, "for those who fear tomorrow" and "systems overload" are awesome.

Right now I've started listening to Gojira again. They're pretty sick for a band that has a song called "Unicorn" and being from france. xD

I've also been listening to some Mastodon lately and Meshuggah.

I'm into really slow and heavy stuff like Electric Wizard and the Melvins - and I also like more cerebral or heavy stuff like Tool and of course Meshuggah.

Also I've been a Metallica fan since kindergarten, haha.

I like you.

You don't happen to be an SYL fan do you? I figure that since you like Gojira and Meshuggah they might appeal to you.

Nope, I've never listened to those guys. You think I'd be into them?

I think you'd probably enjoy Devin Townsend's (the SYL frontman) solo material, at least.

He's got a pretty huge discography, including the SYL stuff there's at least 15 studio albums, nearly all of which are pretty awesome. He's got two (!) full lengths coming out next month.

(Sorry for the bad youtube quality sound, they were the best I could find. There used to be some really high quality ones but they seem to have disappeared...)

0_o Wow, that's prolific.

I actually like their sound, it's not too over the top and they have some solid riffs/grooves. I think I liked Devin's solo stuff a little bit more. Kind of had an Isis/Pelican vibe to it a little. I like both those bands too.

Devin writes all the SYL material too, the duality going on is one of the cooler aspects of the material.

For albums you could check out as a good starting point:
Strapping Young Lad has 'City' and 'Alien', both are amazing albums and either could be the band's best.

for Devin Townsend's solo stuff, I'd reccomend looking for Ocean Machine, Terria, and Synchestra. The two upcoming albums (Deconstruction and Ghost) are looking VERY promising as well.

Ziltoid the Omniscient gets an honorable mention too. Musically it's kind of a weird blend between his solo material and the SYL stuff, but it's all done as this ridiculous concept ablum about a 4th dimensional alien trying to obtain the earth's ultimate cup of coffee so he can use it to time travel and become the universe's greatest guitar player.

SYL is pretty sick. I saw them in 06 (got to see the skullet in action). Townsend has such stage presence, he was hilarious.

I would love to see Townsend live, too bad nothing ever comes anywhere near my town.
