I had no idea that the GBA Super Robot Wars games were SRPGs; I just assumed they were turn-based, like the DS game.

Suikoden Tactics

Most people did not seem to like it, but I really enjoyed it. It has some neat gameplay that include elementals affecting the land (squares) that changes the element attacks of you and the enemy.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

The DS game is an abomination (assuming you mean Mugen Frontier).

I'll also add that Super Robot Wars J for the GBA got a full English fan translation.

Really? Well, I probably shouldn't have bought it new, then. :? But, it couldn't possibly be as bad as Lunar: Dragon Song, right?

I was kind of being facetious. The game was received alright, supposedly it has some decent gameplay. I'm sure it's enjoyable on some level for SRW fans.

I just really dislike it because I'm such a big fan of their SRPG titles, and was irked that when they finally decide to localize another OG game, it's some random spin-off with fan service levels jacked up to the point of silliness.

The first five Front Mission games are great. The recent one is awful. Also good:

Sakura Taisen series (definitely pick up the lone US release at least)
Shining Force 1-3
Vandal Hearts 1 & 2
Super Robot Taisen series
Vanguard Bandits
Brigandine
Kartia
Arc the Lad
Master of Monsters (Genesis version)
Wachenroder
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

Not to hijack the thread, but this seems like a good place to ask a couple of questions.

Surprisingly, I've never played a Front Mission game. What game is the stand-out title, and what iteration of the first game is the best? I already know to avoid this new one (since it's not an SRPG I guess). What's the battle system comparable to?

I'll also throw out Langrisser. Really good series. I think the first one is the only one that got an English localization unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be doing a lot searching around on ebay it looks like.

I think I'll definitely get FM3. Front Mission 4 looked good but I saw videos for it and the color pallet seemed very...well just drab. And apparently the story isn't as great - but it's probably cheap so I might pick it up when I'm done with 3.

I've only played the first one but I think the gameplay for Front Mission is basically like any SRPG, except when you engage an enemy you go into a separate screen or it zooms in and you see your mech make it's attack. You can damage different parts of an enemy and destroy it's arms so it can't attack or it's legs so it can't move as far. If you destroy the body it dies. However you can't specifically aim at a specific limb you must level up and learn to be able to aim at an enemy.

Also instead of the traditional armor/weapons you have Parts so you can buy different types of legs or bodies (much like the Armored Core series) and you can duel wield rifles and machine guns or have claws and axes for melee. There's missiles too of course.

Finally none of your party members can actually die, they're just out of commission for the rest of the battle and afterwards the repair of their mech is deducted from your reward for defeating the enemy.

Ah, and also things like your mech's defense vs. HP vs. Agility play into how well it can avoid or take damage.

Also you can have pilots specialize in either melee, short range, or long range combat. For instance arming a mech with missile launchers has him level up with better long range combat stats and can even guide it's missiles into enemies. This sort of takes the place of a class system I guess.
