Fine sand paper, don't go over board but you should be able to buff them back to being usable.

Instead of sand paper, use the green side of a scrubby sponge. Only lightly dampen it if needed to fit it in the cart end. I had a Frogger cart that looked pretty ugly on the pins and I got it working with using a sponge to remove the bad, then contact cleaner (or alcohol in a pinch) on q-tips to finish up.

Atari branded carts will have the guard but if you push a screwdriver or pencil in the 2 small slots you can push the guard back. If the carts are really bad they might need to be opened to clean properly. Unfortunately the screws are under the label. Peeling the label up or making a hole to get to the screws and fix them is preferable to throwing them away though.

Let me just point out to you that copying a few bytes over the internet is not the same as stealing a car/food/DVD. When you steal a physical product that has cost the person stocking the product. It's a loss, they can't sell it if they no longer have it. Making a copy still means that the original is in tact and can still be sold. It's not cost anybody any money.

If I could make a copy of a car as easily as I could when pirating a film/game I would. You know why? Because it would be easy. Have I cost anybody any money? No because I've copied it.

I don't pull punches, i tell it like it is. People nowadays don't like that, they are over sensitive. People should grow a pair. Unlike most people who are afraid to voice their opinion and have to appologize for everything they say...i could care less. Take it or leave it. Alright dude, just so it's clear: You deserve any ill treatment you get from this point out. Racketboy is a community that does not broker racism, sexism, sexual discrimination, or any of that bullshit.

Not exactly. You are correct in that copying doesn't actually take a physical item or money away from someone, however if you copy something instead of buying it, it would have cost people money.

Moral piracy:
"I won't buy this car, but I will copy it."
The car makers don't lose or gain anything from you.

Immoral piracy:
"I would buy this car, but I will copy it instead."
The car makers don't get the money they would have gotten if you had bought the car. In other words, this does in fact cost them money.
