The layout was originally a gamecube layout (if you look at the light blue markings for BAR/YXL, and the 4 buttons off to the right act as the "c stick")

contrary to the orange markings, the main block of 6 buttons are actually mapped the same as an agetec dreamcast stick (ABC/XYZ), and like i said before, the stick can re-map itself internally for soul calibur 2 on GC. The playstation 2 button layout is a little strange but you can almost always just change the options in the game to set it up on the main 6 buttons. The joystick can also act as the d-pad or either analog stick. I use A,X,Y, and Z for most games, giving me a comfortable 4 button block without moving my hands, except of course in games like MvC where all 6 buttons must be used.

last i remember, works just fine. I play too much powerstone 1/2 still :)

what i need to do is walk down the street to my friends Wii, and plug it into that with the gamecube port. I expect it should work just fine.

I would suggest finding someone or several people who are as good (or as bad) as you and then just playing versus with them once a week or so. I would only go for the arcade stick if you originally played the game in the arcade (which you didn't, as you've already said) or if you want to make yourself superior to the rest of us who just stick with the d-pad because we have a left thumb strong enough to punch through steel.

Seriously, though, find someone to play with, even if you have to pay them.
