Although, frankly, I'd love some good Zelda 2 clones/alternative, cause the game kicked ass.
Castlevania SOTN, homie.
Popful Mail and YS III also.

Zelda is an action adventure for tho most part, and unless you want 5 sub-genres that'll probably be the best choice.

Heh... Yeah, this poll went largely as I expected, but I was curious to see what the general opinion was. Welp, my other post, now more replies than this one, indicates what I was really getting at.

I think there should have been an option for "Zelda IS a Genre" :)

Action/Adventure/RPG/Puzzle/Fighter/Party/Sports and whatever else. Really, though, Zelda carries so much weight with it these days that it practically is its own genre. Quite amazing, really.

It has the characteristics of an action, adventure, and RPGs, though. Granted, it isn't the Late Mr. Gygax's style RPG, but you become stronger as the game progresses (heart pieces and armour), you collect a varity of special items, and you infiltrate dungeons filled with puzzles. That;s RPG. Since it takes place in a straight world, though (no battle screen), it is an action game. The emphasis is normally put on puzzle solving, though, so it's also adventure. Why, I think you might make an argument for Zelda to fit in every genre I listed up there, even sports!
