Although I do consider the PSP to be an overall better system.
Emulation allows both systems to play all the old games, which the psp does stronger. Also, the psp can play ps1 games perfectly like final fantasy 7 or xenogears. Those games make the gba look like shit, no offense. I like the gba.
Well if OP really got torn up between what to buy, couldn't he just buy both? Second hand their both really cheap.

here's what happened:

2007: I bought a DSLite. I enjoyed it immensely. Although I used it for GBA more than DS games. And then I got into homebrew emulation of older systems with the Datel Games N Music cart.

2008: Games N Music cart broke. I realized I hadn't really touched my DS games proper in months, and my GBA games could be played on my Cube. Traded in the DSLite for a PSP.

2009: Realized that I used my PSP for emulating NES or listening to MP3's more than I used it to play PSP games. Sold it.

2010: Found a DS a at a yard sale for $5. I'm no fool. I bought it.

2011: Realized that I had only acquired one DS game in well over 6 months. And I didn't really like it all that much. Bought a PSP and fucking love the shit out of it.

All good and all, but hardly answers the OP's question. It's not which system you consider best, it's which system has the most RPGs.

And I have to say, SNES emulation AND PS1 emulation give the PSP a HUGE advantage. I voted DS, cause I hadn't thought of this, but not only does PSP have a good line up of RPGs, it also has access to the 2 best consoles for RPGs.

Buy a PSP dude. Just don't expect to take it anywhere outside

GBA's RPG library is massive. The DS RPG library is nothing to sneeze at either. Combine the fact that the DS Lite can play GBA games, there shouldn't be much argument. The PSP has a lot of remakes of PS1 RPGs, or flat-out ports via PSN.

I don't think the GBA library argument is very strong (not saying it doesn't have good games, it obviously does). The question was, or is (I think), is the PSP or the DS library better.

It's not like the PSP can't play GBA games, anyway.

right, I almost think emulation should just be out of the arguments.

Exactly. If we're bringing emulation into this, then I'm saying Laptop.

PSP-3000 is my current portable of choice! Awesome SRPGs like Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics & Jeane D'Arc, sweet fighting games like SFA3, Darkstalkers Collection & Powerstone Collection, super RAD games like MGS: Peace Walker! Woo! Fancy! Gotta love the XSEED collector RPGs too!

I'd have to disagree with you there. The DS only has Final Fantasy III, IV, FFTA2 and a bunch of random spin offs. The III remake is... decent. The IV remake is total crap. FFTA2 is ok, but pretty pale in comparison to the original FFT. The spin offs are give or take.

The PSP has:
FF I and II (the definitive versions)
FF IV Complete (definitive version of FF IV + The After Years)
FF Tactics: War of the Lions (enhanced port)
FF VII, VIII, IX (through PSN PS1 classics)
Crisis Core
The Dissidia series

I don't think there's even competition for which handheld does FF better.
That's another way to look at it, as you could count FF IV, V, and VI on GBA for DS to counter the VII, VIII, and IX on PSN. I have almost forgot the growing library for PS1 classics on PSN (yeah for Xenogears and Vagrant Story!)

But I do think the Shin Megami Tensei series has been under-appreciated for the most part by North Americans, and both DS and PSP have solid titles from this series.

SO, OP what do you want in your handhled? I do find it ignoring when an OP posts a thread to ask for suggestions and then hide away, almost if he/she wants to trigger a fanboy war.

The last handheld I've had was the original gameboy, so I appreciate everyones response. Plus I brought home a brand new baby girl two weeks ago and she tends to get all my time these days.

I'm not into emulation, so I could careless about that in a handheld console. I would love to own both but $$$ is an issue. Little girls are expensive! ;)

I really like traditional turn based rpgs. I'm not too interested in action rpgs. I'm not a big Pokemon fan. I played the original ones, so I feel like it is the same game every time. I loved the Persona games on the ps2. I enjoy FF and DQ.

Thanks! :)
