DS or PSP!?!

Post by kgcarini »

I want to get a new handheld that has a good rpg library. I've done some research and it seems that both systems have a great rpg library. I do realize that the DS has more, but is quantity better than quality? I know the PSP has better graphics, but isn't gameplay more important?

Help me decide which system to get! :D

The PSP tends to have more traditional and really fucking weird JRPGs.

The DS tends to have more mainstream-ish JRPGs.

DS piracy is easier, if that matters -- and of course, you do have access to a much larger library.

Gotta say the PSP wins, hands down.

Not trying to be a dick, but the DS tends to cater more to the "kiddie RPGs". Having said that, I realize there are tons of great non-kiddie DS RPGs. The PSP RPG library just seems so much more appealing in my opinion. Ideally, the best course of action is to plan to own both, as they're both pretty nice RPG powerhouses.

IMO PSP is much better for RPGs. Having access to a higher screen resolution and better 3D capabilities for UMD RPGs is great. It's closer to PS2 quality graphics whereas the DS is closer to N64 with it's 3D capabilities. If you connect it to a PS3 or mod it for homebrew you can have access to the PS1 RPG library as well which is what I primarily use mine for lately. It's emulation of older systems can give you access to an incredible library of excellent 2D RPGs (at original resolution or several scaled modes). If you get a 2000 model or better you can hook it up to a TV when you're at home.

Not saying DS doesn't have some great titles and similar capabilities for emulating older systems but I find the PSP to be much more capable. Some DS RPGs make good use of the second screen, but for a lot of them it's just a status screen (like you'd normally get by pressing start). In any case, both of the systems won't leave you lacking in great RPG experiences, so you really can't go wrong either way.

I'm just now delving into the DS library. Haven't really gotten into the rpg side of it yet

I have spent some quality time with the PSP though and it has some nice enhanced ports or remakes of some of the biggest heavyweights in the genre. Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Valkyrie Profile, an upcoming Persona remake, etc. It certainly has great stuff to offer old schoolers and traditionalists. If you're one of those, "when are they going to remake Final Fantasy 7?" types, the PSP is perfect as they have released some great remakes of rpg classics on the system

Oh, and Final Fantasy 7:Crisis Core was a pretty cool action rpg that seemed like a tease for all those people wanting that FF7 remake that may never happen

um, doesn't the GBA slot on the DS lite cancel that third option in the poll?

Also, The World Ends With You, Chrono Trigger, FF4 remake (a game worth remaking, unlike 3 imo), are some good RPGs on the system. Plus many many many strategy RPGs.

There are plenty of RPGs for both systems, are you focusing on any particular series? For SE's Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, DS is the one you want. But the PSP has a greater concentration of mature-theme RPGs.

Tell us what kind of RPGs you want, it will really help us out here.
