I like my MAS systems (they'll make a stick for damn near any console), and I've got a couple HORI's on the way to mod out
How do I get better at 2d fighter?

heres my mas systems, sadly I dont think they make this button layout any more. Its wired for Gamecube, Dreamcast, and PS2. to this day im still mad at myself for not getting saturn on there too, but oh well. The PS2 output is adablable to USB for MAME, and original X-box. The arcade stick is 8-way (360 optical was an option), but the arcade stick "emulates" the analog stick for compatability with all games. The yellow button in the upper right corner switches the arcade joystick between simulating the analog stick or d-pad. If you hold it and press select, it internally re-maps the controls for soul calibur 2 on gamecube. I never play fighters or shmups without this stick.

This is the playstation2 hori stick i have on the way, should be here any day. I've heard its pretty solid, but a button upgrade never hurts.

thnx guys for all the replies ^^
i think my main problem with 2d fighters is the d-pad, analog stick, or even the arcade stick (I can't do well on motion oriented moves).
I actually perform better on the keyboard (more pushing buttons at the right moment, then motion+push button); from this I conclude that I have a problem with 'motion' based controls (analog, d-pad, stick, etc). How would I improve on this aspect?

I'm average at fighting games, but one thing helps me a lot; I'm not sure if it will help you.
For motion-oriented moves, I assume you mean things like the standard fireball move: some people will say it's down, down/forward, forward + punch, perfectionists will say it's 236+P.
Anyway, I never understood when I should push the punch button. The "+" sign makes me think that you should press punch at the same moment as when you put the stick in the forward position. In other words, the fireball is a three part motion: first down, then down/forward, then forward and punch together. BUT! This never seems to work for me. I always try to push the punch button VERY shortly after the quarter-circle motion has been completed (as in immediately after). I don't know why guides and such have the plus sign, I can never seem to get a move to work unless I push the action button after the motion; I think the plus sign should not be there.
Maybe I'm being too obvious here and everybody knows this about pushing the action button after the motion is complete...but I was never told this and until I learned it way back in 1991 in the arcades, I completely sucked. And if everybody else manages to push the button simultaneously with the last direction of the motion and complete the move...well they are better men than I.
Anyway, another suggestion...pick a controller that feels good and that you are going to practice with. Then, enter the training mode and seriously practice one move at a time. Practice a move until you can do it every time, not just once in a while. In the heat of battle, it will all of a sudden become more difficult to pull moves off and they need to be as easy as breathing.
Also...when I started getting better, it was because I forced myself to completely stop button-mashing. Only push the directions and buttons you require for a certain move or combo. It will tighten everything up and make you much more efficient and it makes your mind a lot calmer. Button-mashing only gets the brain pumping too fast, and your reactions will suffer.

I didn't feel like editing my post, so here is some clarification:
I'm saying make sure you push the proper button after the motion is completed. If you try to push it too early, you may in fact push it before the motion is completed, and the special move will never happen in this case. But, there IS a very small window of opportunity AFTER the motion is completed, so try to aim for hitting the button just after the motion.
My biggest mistake when trying to do moves is hitting the final button too early...so don't do it.
There are a million guides and faqs out there...read 'em all, especially for the games you want to get good at.
Good luck!

sooner or later it will become second nature on WHEN to push punch.doctorfugue wrote:I didn't feel like editing my post, so here is some clarification:
