Re: Satoshi Matrix Bead Sprites
non-square pixels? I'm at a loss even knowing what you're talking about. Link me to some DOS related sprites and I'll have a look at them. To answer your question, no, there's nothing like that.
Re: Satoshi Matrix Bead Sprites
Sure, a CRT's physical aspect ratio is 4:3. If you use a resolution with an aspect ratio of 4:3 (e.g 640x480), you'll get square pixels. If you use a resolution with a different aspect ratio, the pixels will not be square. If art is designed for non-square pixels, it will look distorted when displayed on a display with square pixels.
For example, check out the Sierra logo from King's Quest V. It should be a circle, but this game was designed for 640x400 (4:2.5) resolution, so it looks squashed.

Maybe you can use two beads to equal one pixel? I wasn't aware of any rectangular pixels, at least nothing after EGA was the standard. I wanted to do an Arkanoid II pixel art, since it was my first DOS game I ever bought and I played it like crazy, but I ended up using an arcade screenshot for the sprite art.Hatta wrote:I'd really like to get into this, but everything I'd want to do comes from DOS. Usually mode 13h, which has non-square pixels. Is there anyone who sells rectangular beads and pegboards?

Back on topic, here's a set of sprites I just finished under commission for one of our own racketboy members.
Kain and Dark Cecil battle sprites from Final Fantasy II (IV).

Here's a Super Mario Bros. Coinbox that you can use to hold actual coins! Or in my case, SD cards and card readers and such.

From that one I am able to see how good your fuse skills are. I don't know how you do that. You have only a tiny depth of the beads fused, but it makes them stick together, and you don't fuse the other side as you had mentioned!
You use perler beads? I wonder if it is easier than Hama beads. Maybe I'm just crap at it. When I tried to lightly fuse (fortunately I knew better and tried on a small design), I flipped it over to do the reverse side and it fell apart.
Ivo.

That coin box is really impressive man. How did you do the corners?

Thanks for your kind words. As I said, the quality of my work is plain in the images.Ivo wrote:From that one I am able to see how good your fuse skills are. I don't know how you do that. It takes a lot of patience and practice. I tend to use perler, but hama are fine too. neither are really better than the other in my view, though I like the colors of perler more. Making storage boxes like this and the E-Tank I think I posted on the first page take a lot more time.
Thank you. If you notice, it's a zig-zag pattern where the beads interlock together. It had to be done precisely with a measured amount of heat applied to ensure even fusing.fastbilly1 wrote:That coin box is really impressive man. How did you do the corners?

Some drink coasters featuring some of my favorite sprites. On the bottom of each I've glued a layer of cardboard to absorb any small amounts of condensation that might seep through. These are a big hit at parties.

Re: Satoshi Matrix Bead Sprites
So another update. When Megaman 9 came out, I was....very...excited to say the least. One of the projects I had in mind beyond the portrait set was to do the giant Megaman that appeared at the titlescreen

and after a lot of work, I did just that.
Fully finished, large 1:1 scale Rockman charging into action as seen on the titlescreen of Megaman 9. This one ain't small. Again I simply rotated it because I thought Megaman should charge to the right, towards the future!
