Re: Playing Shadow Of The Colossus for the first time
Ico wasn't very fun for me. Shadow of the Colossus on the other hand. The HD remake will most likely cause me and several others to cream their pants. Glad you finally got to play one of the most emotional games of all time. Its the only game besides Heavy Rain that made me feel emotional on so many levels.
Older. Not wiser.

I've been playing through this again with my niece. I defeat one Colossus a day for her (today was #15). This game never ceases to amaze me. I've beaten it 4 times before, and I just today found something cool I never knew about. When you're at the shrine after defeating one of the colossi and the white birds (seagulls?) are sitting around the girl, you can jump and hold R1 to hitch a ride on one!

She really does! On the 11th colossus (the flame one) I scared it off the wrong edge and it mauled me to death despite my best dodges. The next day she told me that she had a "good" nightmare about it. I stopped playing it and she started obsessing about it. She had another "good" nightmare a few days later (that time about the "beard" one). After talking with my brother and sister-in-law about it we decided I should continue to defeat them (she's really loving it). She hasn't reported a nightmare since but if I screw up I might be responsible for her having another nightmare so I've started taking it a lot more seriously. Today she brought up the possibility of a movie based on it and we both agreed it's a bad idea (she remembers the Mario movie). No movie can ever be as good as this game.

I missed this update, but congratulation! It really is a fantastic game. Hearing you retell it makes me want to play it all over again.noiseredux wrote:a few hours ago, I beat the game.
The final battle was "epic" as they say. And really difficult. And yet, I think when it was over I was kind of in disbelief that the whole thing was over. I'm not really sure how to get all my thoughts in order, so I won't bother trying.
Shadow Of The Colossus is officially way near the top of my list of best games ever. I'm really really glad I played through it all finally.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
The ending was brutal at first. The fact that I had helped evil... though I felt that around the time I killed that flying worm thing. And then not witnessing the girl awake. It was all a bit crazy.
One of the best parts of the ending was that you were given control over the Colossus that you became. But even as I knew I had control... I knew it was a hopeless battle. And there I felt a ton of empathy for the 16 creatures I had killed. It was all very Albatross-around-my-neck style.
I'm not sure I understood why I turned into a baby. I guess rebirth was the idea?
At any rate... this game will stick with me for a long time. My wife told me she was glad I was done with it, because just walking by the screen and seeing me kill those giants made her feel sad. She wasn't even playing it and she felt the melancholy. I think that was the best thing about this game. It often made me feel anxious, scared, and really really bad about what I was doing. How many games can pull that off? Not many that I've encountered so far anyway.
It's also awesome that a Hard Mode was unlocked. Normally I could give a fuck about such things, but this is a game I will totally want to play again. Why not have a new challenge. Maybe I'll give it a year or so and delve back in.
Oh and the score. The score is so beautiful. It's probably best that it was used sparingly. But I tell you that score will haunt me. I was in GameStop the other day and a commercial came on one of their monitors advertising the upcoming PS3 remake and as soon as I heard the music my ears perked up, and I felt heroic. I must find the soundtrack.
I know this is all so scatter-brained, but bottom-line: This game is a masterpiece. And I feel this from my own experience now. For which I am proud.

I just lately made myself sit down and play SotC.
I think the graphics have aged very, very well. It's reminiscient of Zelda: Twilight Princess, being a past gen game with visuals and art direction that still leave me in awe even though they're outdated. The music is thundering and grandiose - a work of art unto itself.
The gameplay is frustrating me a little, though... it's beautiful but I'm not having very much fun. Character movement is clumsy, the camera never agrees with me, and I couldn't really progress with killing the 2nd collossus without an explicit pointer on what to do next. I think if I persist it will grow on me though.

Good times ay? Shadow of the Colossus totally freaking rocks. You guys pretty much already said why. I had so much fun playing this game. I was surprised to hear that the first "bull" wasn't a huge pain in your ass. When I first battled him he kicked my ass all over the place. He doesn't wait for anything. As soon as Wander would start to stand back up, there he was grinding me into the ground again. Not to say it wasn't fun. Lots of great memories from this game. I played it guide-free... and when I got to the 16th colossus I had the damndest time figuring out how to make him move his arm to where I needed it. Good times.
Have you tried Hard mode?

Don't lose that memory card. This is one game, I would put a spare memory card in the PS2 case.noiseredux wrote:not yet, but will.optmusprimenumber wrote:
