Yes, but firing a gun and commanding an army are nowhere near as easy as they are in video games. Have you even tried firing a gun? (I don't mean some poxy little airgun or similiar, I mean a full on automatic rifle) I have, that shit is scary. Being able to pull the trigger on virtual assailants and simply pointing a gun at a real life human target are so vastly different that it's impossible to take any modicum of 'skill' you have built up from playing COD and apply it to weapon handling. It's as absurd as saying that you are great a street fighter, therefore you can fight in real life. No. Just. No.casterofdreams wrote:This.MrEco wrote:No. He simply has different taste. This is the number 1 god damn problem with the average gamer and it infests even the most intelligent gaming communities such as Racketboy. Why just because someone likes a game you don't like does that mean they have inferior taste? Fact is, it doesn't. It's simply you being a meatheaded, tunnel-visioned, elitist jerk. Open your eyes a little and try to respect other peoples points of view and the world would be a happier place for everyone (Even yourself).Inazuma wrote:Yeah, your friend is close minded and has bad taste.
Honestly why is this even a problem (or a topic for that matter, although it isn't my right to say). Cod is a great game, like any other game. And while anyone and everyone is entitled to ones opinion, at least make it a "big people" one.
"You hate Cod. Great. Now tell me why?"; and "cuz it sux!" isn't a viable reason. Remember "big people" opinion.
I don't like RTS games. Why? Because I don't have the mindset to watch over everything that happens during a match and I don't have the patients to delve deeper into the game itself such as what units do to actually improve the way I play them. But I respect the people why play them. Why?
(bare with me here)
Because if we were invaded by some other country I'd have the RTS guy direct where the solders should go while I, being the solder, will concentrate on hitting my mark consistently. (though a child like response I delivered it in an adult way)

Great points I understand completely. But you can kinda understand where I was going with that last thing I was saying.
Re: Why i start to hate COD and FPS in general
Nah, I'm with the original poster. I've come to despise the casual gamer's obsession with COD and first-person shooters in general. It's just irritating
In my house last year, there was a group of 5 of us living together. I had a Dreamcast + about 60 games, and ALL anyone EVER played was that bloody Modern Warfare 2 game on my house-mate's PS3. I'm deadly serious. Even he had at least 5-10 games, but that's the only game that anyone played. We used to have mates 'round all the time, and everyone would play multiplayer games on CODMW2 online nearly everyday until we all moved out. It drove me mad lol.
I played it quite a bit myself to see what the fuss was all about, and I just couldn't see it. One of the most overrated games in years in my (elitest
) opinion.
The icing on the cake though, was the one time I actually got a chance to play on my Dreamcast. There I was playing on Alien Front Online (ok I guess ironically that is kind of a shooter too), and one of our mate's that was over had the cheek to scoff at the graphics on the game, as if that had anything to do with the actual gameplay. Hell, people looked at me like I was some kind of alien for playing "old" games. It was the same whatever game I played on, nevermind that if it was the mighty Shenmue or Power Stone. It's just "lulz look at the graphics!!1" or "where are the guns?" It's terrible I tell you.
BTW, in case it isn't obvious, this whole post was slightly tongue-in-cheek, but the story is mostly true.

Yes, it does sound like those people were jerk offs for scoffing at the games you liked. In truth the jerkiness and general retardation goes around both ways. People who are mindless zombies that refuse to play anything that isn't new and popular and stare at you like you just had sex with their mother right in front of them for playing anything slightly obscure or old or that doesn't have constant explosions and shooting can be mind numbingly irritating. However there's an unavoidable level of hypocrisy that comes from the other end of the spectrum that for me personally makes it all the more insulting.

To me, 'bad taste' is simply having low standards and not really caring why you like something. Not bothering to explore a particular interest while claiming to be interested in it.
Re: Why i start to hate COD and FPS in general
Well the guy who scoffed is a friend to be fair, it's not like he was being mean. He was just laughing at the "bad" graphics. I don't really hold it against him, or any casual gamer for that matter, it's just how things are.MrEco wrote:^@Reprise

Like I said my post was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but an example of why I find the whole FPS/COD craze irritating at times. Besides, we all know FPSs are meant to be played with a keyboard and mouse on a PC
In truth though, being serious, you are right. It definitely works at both ends of the spectrum, and there really is some hypocrisy that comes from that other end of it.
And what I didn't mention in my story is, in actual fact, my housemates and I used to play Dreamcast allllll the time together. It got way more play-time than the PS3. There was a lot of raised eyebrows when I told my housemates that I was going to bring my Dreamcast over from my parents', in fact, the girls hadn't even heard of it, but after I did, everyone absolutely loved it and they played on it more than me. What changed? F'ing CODMW2 came out, and that's why I'm so bitter

Re: Why i start to hate COD and FPS in general
All I know is that FPS's were practically my favorite genre last gen. Mostly sci-fi titles, gems like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Unreal Gold, Half-Life, the first Halo, Red Faction, Timesplitters, etc there were a lot of them worth playing. Now this gen has successfully pretty much killed this genre for me. Modern settings bore me to tears, and CoD's omega scripted gameplay and painfully boring level design is absolutely atrocious. Sadly it doesn't seem like this genre is going to fall as easily as stuff like motion games or whatever, but man it can't come soon enough...
At least they're bringing us Serious Sam 3 and Duke Nukem Forever this year, oh and Portal 2 I guess. Finally some new ones that look fun.

It sounds like you might want to check out Bulletstorm if you haven't already.Ryvius wrote:At least they're bringing us Serious Sam 3 and Duke Nukem Forever this year, oh and Portal 2 I guess. Finally some new ones that look fun.

I'm a little skeptical honestly, I played the demo and liked it but I just have to wonder if the whole style novelty would wear off after awhile. But yeah I'd probably need to play the actual game to decide. That said I'm definitely happy to see another goofier shooter.MrEco wrote:It sounds like you might want to check out Bulletstorm if you haven't already.Ryvius wrote:At least they're bringing us Serious Sam 3 and Duke Nukem Forever this year, oh and Portal 2 I guess.
