Given the choice between a COD game and any of these, I'd take the COD game every time. I own 3 of them and have played a bit of each. Does that make me some sort of meathead gamer?
Demon Souls is a great game, however I don't think that's what you were aiming at.

Yes, Demon's Souls is a great game - but honestly I only sunk 4-5 hours into it before deciding the frustration level wasn't worth it. I may go back at some point which is why I keep it around...

But if I have only occasional access to a PS3 I sure as hell am not going to "try" Demon's Souls or Yakuza. As for those fighting games, they are all some of the weakest in their series (SUPER SF4 is awesome, though) and I would rather play COD12345678 than any of them if I was forced to choose.

I think the important point in the anecdote is that the fellow didn't even try any of the other games. Tastes vary, but everyone should at least try to expand their horizons when possible. Especially if you're borrowing someone's console, try some of their games. It'll give you something more to talk about, and shows that you at least respect the persons opinion. If it went down the way it seems, the guy seems pretty rude.

I hear what you're saying, but that kind of general outlook is kind of what's wrong with gaming today. Games like Demon's Souls and the Yakuza series try to offer something completely unique and fresh, which is something every developer should do. Call of Duty just relies on the safety of putting out the same game ever year (I know this is an oversimplification, but it's undeniable that every iteration of the game for the past 4 years is incredibly similar), which is something that should be generally looked down upon in an industry all about being a creative medium. The huge costs of development and $60 price tags on newly releases games surely contribute to this, but it's a sad day when developers that try to create new games with new ideas are pushed under by developers that just milk the same idea for all it's worth, and get rewarded for it.

Yeah, your friend is close minded and has bad taste. He sounds like one of those casual gamers who just plays the newest popular games because everyone else is doing it.

But since he is close minded, he won't listen to your advice to try other games. The best thing for you to do is respect his decisions and just let him play Call of Duty. He is happy playing it, so let him continue.

It sucks that you know better and want to help your friend discover other fun games, but he won't give them a chance. You don't have to let him borrow your PS3, but you shouldn't forbid him to play Call of Duty on it.

I think what dsheinem was trying to point out is that since the guy is forced to only borrow the PS3 he is using he probably doesn't have a lot of time with it. If so then large games that could take 40+ hours to beat like Demon's souls or Yakuza aren't very smart choices unless your OK with not actually making any real progress in the game. On the other hand if you have access to Black Ops which you can easily get into a multiplayer match that only lasts 10 minutes it would end up the much more economically sensible option.

No. He simply has different taste. This is the number 1 god damn problem with the average gamer and it infests even the most intelligent gaming communities such as Racketboy. Why just because someone likes a game you don't like does that mean they have inferior taste? Fact is, it doesn't. It's simply you being a meatheaded, tunnel-visioned, elitist jerk. Open your eyes a little and try to respect other peoples points of view and the world would be a happier place for everyone (Even yourself).

I guess I see what you mean... but if I was borrowing a console, I would want to try out it's unique games, rather than just play one of the games that's available on every platform under the sun, that I've most likely already played dozens of times before. I don't see how it's infeasible to beat Demon's Souls or Yakuza when borrowing a PS3 either, both games can be beaten in a week, or even shorter depend on your playtime habits. Unless you're just borrowing the console for a day or something, a game's length shouldn't really be a factor in what game you're going to play.

This.

Honestly why is this even a problem (or a topic for that matter, although it isn't my right to say). Cod is a great game, like any other game. And while anyone and everyone is entitled to ones opinion, at least make it a "big people" one.

"You hate Cod. Great. Now tell me why?"; and "cuz it sux!" isn't a viable reason. Remember "big people" opinion.

I don't like RTS games. Why? Because I don't have the mindset to watch over everything that happens during a match and I don't have the patients to delve deeper into the game itself such as what units do to actually improve the way I play them. But I respect the people why play them. Why?

(bare with me here)

Because if we were invaded by some other country I'd have the RTS guy direct where the solders should go while I, being the solder, will concentrate on hitting my mark consistently. (though a child like response I delivered it in an adult way)
