@msimplay Well, my virtual console point was more of an example I guess. I recognise that is is merely emulation, and that there are differences and limitations with emulation. I too prefer playing things on the original hardware as intended (as I imagine most of the members here do). But I guess what I should have said is, it seems a bit harsh discrediting a console because some of its great exclusives have later seen release elsewhere, whether it be ports or mere emulation, particularly when it's occurred after the death of that console. I love the SNES, for example, but 3 of my favourite games for it have all seen release elsewhere. Final Fantasy VI has been released for the PS1 and DS. Chrono Trigger on the DS. Zelda A Link To The Past on the GBA. That doesn't mean though, that I view the SNES as being any worse.
But yeah, I agree with you on how I justified my love for the Gamecube with just games. I hasn't really thought about it like that, but you're right. I think other factors are important with consoles (controller, peripherals, hardware etc) too, but at the end of the day, with most consoles I just have a list of about 10, maybe even 20, games I love.
And with regards to the Dreamcast, I completely agree. That is exactly one of the reasons why the console is so special to me too. You're absolutely right about how at the time, Arcade perfect ports were seen as being like the holy grail. Dreamcast was the FIRST console to bring amazing arcade perfect ports and I remember just being blown away by the power of the machine. Back then I loved arcades and that's another reason why the Dreamcast was my console of choice. It's a shame arcades died out.

Umm... the Neo Geo home console launched in 1990, almost a decade before the dreamcast, and has stronger arcade ports. I love the dreamcast but the AES/MVS beats it there hands down.Reprise wrote:

I guess the Dreamcast was the first to bring 3D arcade perfect ports into the home though right?

Na disagree NeoGeo does not beat it hands down the Neogeo games were not as diverse as the Dreamcast library plus the hardware allowed more possibilities.
While everything is purely opinion and highly subjective I don't recall the NeoGeo ever having any RPG's on the AES or many racing games or 3d fighters.
One my most favourite racing games of all time Daytona USA was not on the NeoGeo.
My most favourite 3d fighter Soul Calibur was not on the and one of my most favourite 2d fighter franchises was also not on the NeoGeo Street Fighter.
When the Neogeo was out I had a Snes so the Snes holds more relevance to me during that time.
Then when mainstream consoles got more powerful I had a Saturn and played very good ports of NeoGeo fighting games.
To me the Neogeo is a very niche console due to the pricing it has I personally won't pay £100+ per game in fact in the Neogeo heyday I really couldn't afford to.
Now that I can afford that kind of money per game I don't see the point anymore as many of the good games were ported during it's lifecycle and are getting rereleased on various consoles. Even with that said I know real hardware is better but for me the Neogeo is the past that I don't care to ressurect since it didn't hold that good of a place in my history in the first place.
However I can see why it would have a really important space in video game history.
As many ports even today are not Neogeo perfect
Also you can't get stronger ports than porting to the same hardware so that's kind of cheating the Neogeo was the same in the Arcade as it was in the home.
The Dreamcast although similar to the Naomi Arcade still had some porting to do as there was differences in the amount of ram and media used to store the game.

You have to remember the time frame around the Neogeo release. At the time, arcades were platformers, puzle games, 2d fighters, and others. 3D fighting games did not come to the mainstream until the mid 90s with the release of games like Battle Arena Toshinden or Tobal no1. SNK released their franchises in fantastic form. The idea was to be able to play perfect arcade versions at home of the games people loved like Metal Slug or Garou, or even cheaper releases like Magician Lordmsimplay wrote:lol perhaps I should reiterate the first one anyone could affordBradtemple87 wrote:Umm... the Neo Geo home console launched in 1990, almost a decade before the dreamcast, and has stronger arcade ports. The hardware being the same is the exact reason it is so desirable. The ports were pure and required no tweaks.

I do remember respective time frames but that's not the point since we are comparing the Dreamcast and Neogeo library today since the Dreamcast wasn't released when the Neogeo was released in the first place.Bradtemple87 wrote:

Plus Naomi to Dreamcast ports were really as close as you could get without being the exact same hardware plus having a multi home console is better than an Arcade really since you aren't limited to one game or one type of game.
I mean I don't really think an RPG would sit right in the Arcade either way
As for desirable that would still be subjective as some people such as myself probably still won't pay 100+ per game and as such still regarded as niche.
Many consoles have failed due to their price points so pricing is important or at least that's how I see it.

I think it would be safer to say that the Dreamcast was the LAST console to bring amazing arcade perfect ports.Bradtemple87 wrote:Umm... the Neo Geo home console launched in 1990, almost a decade before the dreamcast, and has stronger arcade ports. Re: Top 10 Consoles According to GameFAQs
Hmm...yeah, if it were about the importance/impact they had on the industry it'd be more like
1)2600(pretty much starting the programmable cartridge home console industry)
2)NES (doubt this would have to be explained to anyone)
Saw some thoughts on the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine earlier in the thread. This was obviously more of a popularity contest, and we're talking a console that had little impact in the states, and was essentially an import shoot em up console. While shoot em ups seem to be a popular enough genre across the 'net, it's maybe the 3rd most popular behind fighting, which is behind RPG(most likely the reason for the SNES shooting ahead). So it's almost like triple niche(a niche genre, that is still behind in popularity on the 'net, that mostly requires importing on the console). Had some good, fun titles though.

Re: Top 10 Consoles According to GameFAQs
Yeah, I know it was just a popularity contest... but as far as impact on the home console market goes, the PC Engine is no joke. It's a lot more than a good shump import console (although it certainly is). Having the Super CD attachment years before any other console had anything like that alone makes it a big deal. I mean, the thing had redbook audio and FMVs in 1988.MidnightRider wrote:Saw some thoughts on the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine earlier in the thread.
