2. NOT using a cheap extension cord, the low amp rating murder on the PS3 hungry power needs.
I would also like to stress the points above. In general, it just seems to be a better idea to leave your PS3 flat for that all important air circulation if you can.

My launch 60gb's bluray laser died, (a $100 repair) but thankfully the DVD still works. So being a lunch model I was worried what would break down next so I just bought a new slim ps3. I haven't bothered to fix the laser in the 60gb because it still plays ps2 games up-scaled (PS2 is in the closet now), and I use my new slim for PS3 games to minimize ware! Works great if you have the room in your entertainment center and the cash to do it.

dont own a launch version. even though i wanted one. i didnt want to spend $600 friggin dollars on one. So i opted for the semi-backwards compatible 80gb motorstorm version. (paid $500) Still going strong as well. Even though its a bit newer.

I own a 60gb PS3 as well... the only PS3 worth owning in my opinion. In fact if Sony released the PS3, as the model they are selling now, I would never have bought one.

I can agree with this. I've been on the fence about getting a PS3 for a while now and, after doing some research, this is the only model I'll consider buying.

$100!?

I had the same problem and fixed mine myself for half that. If the blu-ray laser is dead, I reckon it's only a matter of time before DVDs and PS2 games stop working too. Mine went out the same way...
