Modern gaming ramblings

Post by FerretGamer »

I was thinking about this today and came to the revelation that modern gaming is way too complex in almost an annoying way. I'm not talking about complexity in the amount of buttons that are on a controller or the difficulty of a game. I am, however, talking about how its almost annoying and complex just to get a game started.

For example, I own great games on the Wii, but I find it annoying just to delve into a Wii game because of everything involved. The Wii has the sensor bar that needs to be setup correctly. Then, I need to determine whether a game uses a nunchuk or just the Wiimote or the classic controller, or perhaps a plastic attachment that makes the experience better.

Moving on, we have the fragmentation of two consoles in the Xbox 360 and PS3. Both Microsoft and Sony felt the need to hop on the motion control bandwagon and introduce the Kinect and Move, respectively. In addition, the advent of 3D gaming and 3D television. This, however, introduces another layer of annoyances with gaming. Take a look at this Killzone cover and its wonderful smattering of logos and gimmicks and it would be enough to prove my point.

Of course, we have always had "add-ons" and accessories, but I guess I'm truly getting older and becoming increasingly annoyed with modern gaming. In contrast, I realize that offering options is always a good thing for consumers and they simply remain options, which people can choose to accept or decline.

To end my ramblings, it was beautiful when all I had to do was plug in my NES controller and power it on. I didn't have to calibrate anything or have to worry about gimmicks and different control options/accessories. Then again, it's probably why I invest more into a retro collection and am registered on a forum that primarily discusses retro games. Yet, I'm still the owner or a PS3, Wii (with tons of accessories,) 360, and Kinect.

Sorry guys and gals, just felt like starting a topic. :)

Edit: Just wanted to add, running out of space for everything is always a problem. :?

Mostly agree.

The industry has moved on and the audience has long-since changed. I'm surprised so many pro review rubrics still have a "gameplay" category these days. You'd think that had long since been shed for the new "CAN YOU DUAL WIELD?" score.

I'll just simply say that I easily think DLC is the worst thing to happen in gaming, ever.

And it's the #1 thing I'm absolutely sick of hearing about 10 times a day on news/blog sites, most often about upcoming DLC releases before a game is even out or the day they're pushed out. Terrible.

I definitely agree, gone are the heady of days of plug-and-go.

I used to stray away from PC gaming due to the huge amount of time and investment setting things up and keeping everything up to date. But now i'm pretty sure my PS3 spends more time updating itself, installing files etc than my computer. Not to mention that when i bought it, i had to purchase a hd monitor and now theres move?

This generation I have only bought 4-5 games. 1 being the genesis collection on PS3. Its probably been the worst investment i made for quite some time, but i hold onto it just in case something truly special comes along. I'm not saying that the games released are bad, but they just don't have any long term place in my collection. The games have become disposable. I feel like the companies are churning out new intellectual properties just for the sake of it, then bombard me with DLC invites.

You know, I think it might be time to get out the NES.

We still have the nintendo ds/3ds which seem to be sticking to the simple put in your game and play method of 1978.

i couldn't agree more with this, which is probably why the last current gen game i bought was project gotham 4, only because it was cheap as hell. i'm talking less than 10 bucks, i think. i just am not into characters or stories or games that take hours upon hours upon hours to beat.

all i want is simple with rock solid controls.

edit: after reading your first sentence i made my post. after posting, i just read your whole post, which is talking about different things than i posted. either way, i am not really into modern gaming.
if you took a shit, please put it back

Maybe not for long though, with talk about the VC for the NDS and physical media nearing its end more than likely sometime soon.
