I'm an avid Doom player but I still think Doom 3 is a great game, it's just different. I love id's attention to detail and art design in the game, the environments are amazing. That said it's a pretty simplistic shooter and I can see how some might not like it.

If you guys want a real jump between Doom 2 to something else, I'd say Doom 64 is more like a true Doom 3.

YES! Seriously guys, if you're a fan of the Doom series and want something else to try out, Doom 64 is the way to go. It's a really interesting and dark experience, with some great changes to the monster designs. Plus the laser is worth using.

I'll put in another good word for Doom 64. That was one of the better incarnations of the game. It had some really scary levels and got downright satanic as you got further into it.

I liked Doom 3, and I liked the expansion for it even better. This is a good game that gets a bad rap.

I think it's severely hurt by the somewhat poor audio, as it really helped reinforce how weak my guns felt...and they felt pretty weak. I had complaints about other things, but that absolutely bugged me the most. Yes, I know I can mod in the original sounds, but I don't feel I should have to, especially in an FPS. Guns should go boom, not plink.

However, Doom 3 is worth checking out for the monster designs. Seriously, those things were amazing, with my favorite being the fly/children hybrids. I remember first encountering those and groaning at their hideousness as I emptied several rounds of buckshot into them. Nasty buggers.

Good to see some Doom 64 fans! I never played the N64 version per se... but did the whole Absolution TC on the PC, which is probably the better experience since it's got the superior framerate and everything. It's probably one of the toughest incarnations of classic Doom stuff as well, I swear it felt like later on Hell Knight's were the regular Marine/Imps, even some of the toughest Doom WAD's don't get that crazy! And back when I first played it on my laptop the later stages lagged like hell, they were so insane lol.

Gotta agree about Doom 3 having poor audio, that's a pretty good point actually. I even just thought some of the guns straight up sounded stupid, the machine gun comes to mind. Definitely something other games paid a bit more attention too, like say Dead Space or whatnot.

To be honest as much as I did enjoy Doom 3, I've never been able to finish the expansion. Everytime I try it I just lose the drive a few hours in, something about it just doesn't feel as good as the original Doom 3.

Well, regardless of actual quality, I was so hyped up for Doom 3 (the game with the best graphics of any game in the world!!!) that there was no way I wasn't gong to play it. It was linear, repetitive, and cheap. I liked it anyway, and I still do find it enjoyable. Half Life 2 was definitely the superior game though.

Admittedly it's not really their fault, as there was some sort of dispute with Trent Reznor really late in the project, causing him to pull all his music and audio clips, including the gun sounds. I understand they had to run with what they had, but it really wasn't a good choice.

The grenade physics were another thing that really pissed me off. It never mattered where I threw a grenade, it would always bounce back and explode in my face. Seriously, I tried playing with it in different rooms. I even chucked them at different angles out of an open vent I was in, and they kept bouncing back in and exploding on me. After that, I decided I just wouldn't ever use them.

I still haven't played the expansion, as the only time I had access to it, it was several years after playing Doom 3, and I no longer had access to the original game.

I am confused by this game, this is the only game up until now that felt its good and bad at the same time. I didn't feel like its doom except at the end when you go to hell. I know that darkness can make it exciting, but sometimes its your gun in the middle of a black screen, damn. The game felt fun to play but boring in the same time I can't understand this. I also had no idea what is the story other than this guy goes to Mars and some monsters are coming from a Hell portal then you have to get a cube that kills them from Hell even though I watched all the scenes and read the emails and all that. I had no idea whats the evil doctor doing and when did he started to be the bad guy, I thought the guy with the goatee was the bad guy.

THe guns are weird, they look varied but weak at the same time. You hardly need to use them. Whats the use of adding fists to the game? You can't punch monsters. Hand grenades are hardly used. The coolest weapon is the cube where it kills an enemy and gives you its life. That was fun.

Last thing is graphics. What did you think of the graphics. This was released in the end of 2004, the gamespot review guy could not stop praising the graphics, that was close enough to the 360 launch. I dunno I thought other games had better graphics from the same era like Ninja Gaiden for example. The characters were very plain, like they were incomplete 3D models , or they have been done on a '92 computer.
I love the game one of my all time favs, its one of the few games that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck although i did often played the game in the dark.
The atmosphere is set by the fact its dark in most places and you have to use the flashight,if all you can see is a gun in a black screen you prob need to increase the brightness in the game settings if possible. Its also best played in a quiet environment to help soak in the story.
I am not sure what you mean by the weapons are weak and you hardly need to use them sounds like a conflicting statement,i remember running around with low ammo many times in a panic looking for guns and ammo and scared i would bump into too many enemies to survive an attack lol, also the graphics were top notch for back then i had to update my pc to play it too,i think its just a fact that after that FPS games started using better graphics engines like Unreal engine but the DOOM3/Quake4 engine graphics are still good take a look.

I liked it. I'm not really certain where it's bad reputation came from, I always thought it was a solid and fun shooter. I got a real kick out of seeing all the classic enemies spruced up. Not much else to say, I just think it's a real fun game.
