The Playstation 2 is officially the best selling console
Re: The Playstation 2 is officially the best selling console
I've never owned a PS2, I always had a roommate that had one so I didn't need to. I might have to someday though just to say I've had one.

The PS2 won cause it had software. It had lots and lots of excellent software for all tastes. The gamecube and the dreamcast "failed" cause they didn't have a wide variety of games. They excelled at some genres, but the PS2 did at more. Though I still enjoyed my gamecube way more than I did my PS2.

In the long run, this is true. But when discussing its advantages at launch? The PS2 got that amazing software because of the massive install base that followed.ZeroAX wrote:The PS2 won cause it had software. It had lots and lots of excellent software for all tastes.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Anyone else shudder at the idea of having a COMPLETE ps2 library?...

If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Yes I too have thought of this. Where do you start? How do you end? They're still releasing games!avrame wrote:Anyone else shudder at the idea of having a COMPLETE ps2 library?...

I think this went beyond coincidence. Sony had recognized the desire for something better than VHS existed in the market but a quality alternative had yet to come along. Given the cost of DVD players and components at the time it seems that Sony's DVD capability was a calculated risk. It doesn't seem likely that they would have made the huge investment in DVD technology and increased the cost per unit considerably if they weren't expecting a payoff.Flake wrote:I think timing its release with the sudden explosion of demand for DVD's was somewhat coincidental. There is no way Sony could have predicted that they would time it so perfectly. Look what happened with the PS3 and Bluray, afterall.
