It's, um... a side effect of being rapidly superheated by an energy weapon?

The first game was awesome, but I can see how it'd be very hard for new people to get into. Of course, if you're emulating you can use this:

ooh, i just looked into this, downloaded stuff, and fired it up... it's neato

The thing I don't like about LUA scrips like these is that it seems like it would take away any incentive someone might have to implement some of the same features via an ASM hack...

would that be something where the map and other extras are built in to the rom? in other words: ASM hack?

i'd like to add in regards to the metroid 2 color hack vs. the metroid 2 gbc pallette debate: after watching some youtubeage of the gbc variant and after playing with the color hack variant, it seems both do one thing or another better than each other.

Yeah, basically. People are figuring out how to do some crazy things with ROM hacks now, by disassembling the program in the ROM and changing what it does. The ever-popular Sonic Megamix project is an extreme example of this.

In the original Metroid, does anyone else feel that the hidden passages - locating them and their necessity in the game - are a bit "cheap"? I'm playing it for the first time (by way of Wii VC) and they can be reduced to, 'stumped? bomb every tile of every dead end.' Which seems a little "cheap" to me. Or have I just gone soft?

In my view a hidden, bomb-able passage should be more for an extra "heart piece" or little bonus at most. If it leads to anything more important, I'd appreciate some clues like slightly tinted tile or a sound effect when entering the room (Zelda) or....

I'm quite late to this thread. But I wanted to show my love for Metroid, as well. I absolutely love the exploration in those games. There is so much to find and so many different paths to take. And the suit upgrades throughout the game are awesome. Although I'd like too start seeing some completely different upgrades on the suit in later entries. And the whole series is just so sci-fi and cool looking (yeah, I'm a geek).

I was a little to young when the first Metroid came out on NES. I was still pretty much only into straight-platformers and action games at that age. Metroid was a little to in-depth for me then. I didn't get into the Metroid series until Super Metroid on SNES. I was completely engrossed in that game, borderline obsessed. It always shows up in my top games list. I still play it from time to time.

Metroid: Fusion was a great follow-up to Super Metroid on GBA. It was just too bad it took so freaking long to get it. Once I got my hands on it, I loved it. Not quite as good of graphics as Super Metroid, but the gameplay evolved enough that it didn't matter. Metroid: Zero Mission on GBA was fantastic, as well. Much more playable than the original NES entry. Prettier graphics, Super Metroid style moveset, and extra goodies added.

I even love the Metroid: Prime series. I like the 2D entries better, but the Primes (1 & 2 at least, I haven't played 3 yet) are still great. Very atmospheric, eerie, and alien feeling. And just absolutely beautiful graphics and soundtrack.

I haven't given Metroid: Other M enough of a chance yet to properly judge it. To tell the truth, I got stuck and started playing other games instead of really trying at it. That's not a good sign.

I have never completed Metroid for NES or Super Metroid for SNES. Are they difficult and/or time consuming to beat? Do I need a walk through on getting through it? Metroid is just one fo those series that I just never got around to completing so I'm curious as to what I'm in for since I want to give it a complete try and not just playing it.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Super Metroid can be done without a guide, just a sense of exploration. The original Metroid can be difficult because there is no map (unless you use the script addon I linked earlier in the thread). Plus, with the original Metroid you aren't as well directed as you are in Super. In the original Metroid once you get the bombs you can explore around 80% of the world, with the final bits requiring the ice beam and high jump boots.
