This is because 512KB is the size of the flash memory the PowerPak uses to load ROM data onto. The Chinese FF7 is a 2MB ROM, which is extraordinarily huge for a NES ROM, and much too large for the PowerPak to load. And now I remember debating with some one if a reproduction would be possible due to the size.
you may be correct.

I've played it on my PSP, but could never get it to work on my GBA. So who knows.

Well, "Any game with PRG or CHR larger than 512KB will not work on the PowerPak" is a direct quote from the PowerPak page on the Retro Zone website. Furthermore, if you look at the description of hardware inside the PowerPak, toward the bottom of the page, it says that it has one 512KB memory for PRG and one 512KB for CHR. So the total memory it has available for a ROM is 1024KB (1MB) and since the FF7 ROM is double that size, it puts the PowerPak shit out of luck for playing it. It's just not possible at all because of the size.

Shame, really, cause it'd be nice to check it out. Though even if the PowerPak had larger memory for ROMs, who knows if it supports the mapper. When I loaded the FF7 ROM into NES Mapper Program, it said it uses mapper 3, but I seriously doubt that.

ah that sucks. FFVII NES is really an amazing game. Seriously. You'd think a cheapo hack-job would just that, but this thing is so well-made. It's really what you wish for: what would a NES version of FFVII have looked like?

At least a repro would be possible, though you would most certainly need a real FF7 Famicom cart to make it.

You know, there's something else I just thought of that I really think you should have mentioned in your article. The PowerPak can play FDS games, and does so amazingly. The fact that you're playing them from a flash cart on a NES might put an idea in your head that it's no different than emulation, but in fact, you're playing it on real hardware so it's almost exactly like the real deal!

Maybe you wont wanna mentioned particular games, but I think you should at least mention the fact that the PowerPak is capable of running FDS games. And mention the differences that some games have. Like Metroid for example. Among other differences, the ability to save instead of using an annoyingly long password.

The only down side is that some FDS games used extra sound channels that the Famicom had. Games that use them, these sounds will be missing on a stock NES. All you have to do is add a single resistor between two pins on the bottom extension port on the NES and then you'll be able to hear all sounds from FDS games. This "mod" (if you wanna call it that) has no other effect.

By the way, how's the FF7 ROM? Did you try it yet?
