Just finished modding a GC controller and it's working great. If you need some one to mod it for you let me know or I can sell you mine. PM me if interested

Always that one more mod. Maybe add a small toggle switch to select A B layout.

Did you just carefully grind to get to the trace?
I used an X-Acto knife to cut the trace and then expose a bit of copper to solder the wire.

A small 2P2T switch would do the job fine.

I know I have some laying around but I'm not sure if they are small enough.

Maybe use DIP switches to flush mount on the back of the controller some where so you don't have a switch sticking out.
