Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Hmm...
I might have to try this the next time I have a problem.
Thanks. 8)
No problem.

For example, I had a genesis/32x/sega cd combo that nba jam te 32x wouldn't play on once. I got the game off ebay and assumed it was a dud cart.

Turns out it was nothing but dirty contacts on the genesis/sega cd but on the sega cd side. I tried booting the game with the system unplugged from the cd unit and it worked! Cleaned the contacts really well and it boots with no problem now.

As a rule....90% of the time, the cause of the problem will be obvious. That 10% that it's not is what will trip you up hard if you don't keep an open mind.

Is there a recommended method for cleaning an N64 cart slot's contacts? I have a copy of mischeif makers that just refuses to work even after cleaning it (I don't have the necessary game bit - I know, my bad- so I havent opened it to clean it, just ran a cotton bud over the visible contacts). I'll get the screwdriver I need sometime and have another go, but I do know my N64 is quite old now, has moved house several times, and frankly could probably do with a damn good clean.

Will the same method work for all consoles? I've heard ot the cereal box thing, but it doesnt sound very thorough, and i'd be concerned about leaving traces of paper behind, even after a blast of compressed air.

The cart slot is, as far as cleaning goes, the same on every console. The important thing to remember here is the thickness of the game PCB. Obviously, you don't want to jam something in there that is thicker than a game cart. But on the other hand, if it isn't thick enough, it wont do a good job cleaning. Best bet is, for whatever you're using, to try and match the thickness of the game PCB. And actually, I would go just a little thicker, just so it hits the contacts harder to clean them better.

Use anything, not just cardboard from a cereal box. I've heard a few people recommend a few credit cards together. What I would do is wrap some cloth around whatever you're using, like an old T-shirt or something. Preferably something that wont leave any debris behind, like lint. I would think a white cotton T-shirt would be best. Dampen it with some rubbing alcohol and push it in and out of the pins (like you would with a cart) but NOT back and forth. The benefits of using the white T-shirt will be visually seeing the dirt and grim you pull off the pins.

I've heard other suggestions that said to use a cart to clean the console's cart connector. Just get the cart's pins wet with rubbing alcohol then insert and eject it a few times from the console. Obviously, you would want to clean the cart's pins after this.

This type of help thread is coming up a lot, I think I'll make an extensive cleaning guide when I get the chance (it's why I made the burning guide).

Deal, as long as I get to pick apart your grammar.

Also, if you want to quote someone, just use the [ QUOTE ] function. Hit the "Quote", and that will give you an area between
[/ quote] to write inside. It is very handy.

Did you get your Smash Bros. game working yet?

Sadly no, I may try to find that special tool to take it apart. Pisses me off, I don't wan't to pay virtual console for it if I can get it working. Plus my wii is already almost full on memory and my sd card is also about full. I'm trying to save room, I purchased wii fit for my wife for chrsitmas and I know it takes up a channel.

I hope if this rumored "wii 2" comes out it's got a bigger hard drive. And it would kick ass to have a zelda game in HD...and a donkey kong country game in HD...and a star fox game in HD...and a Mario game in HD..and a Metroid game in HD...and.......the list goes on

I was thinking about doing that this week, and of my 5200 games that are all about to be pronounced k.i.a. I'll post it when I get a chance.

Have you heard of the "Homebrew Channel" for the Wii? If not, it is a type of software hack that appears as a channel on your Wii. You can access it thought a security hole in the newest Smash Brothers game. With this channel, you can run various emulators on your Wii. The 16-bit ones and older work really well. They do have 2600 and Odyssey2 emulators, if that's your fancy. The 2600 ones works well. You can also install game channels for N64 games without downloading them from the Shop Channel. Legally, it is a grey area of course, but if you stick to games you own then I would say you are in the clear (at least morally!).

The Homebrew channel supports HD SD cards (2GB plus) and USB hard drives, so space should not be an issue at all. Since the Homebrew Channel only takes up one channel, this is a way to literally get hundreds of 16-bit games and older on just that one channel. Brilliant!

You can find more information on it here:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Channel

and here:

My wife really enjoys Wii Fit, so hopefully your wife will as well.

Your local hardware store might have 3.8mm (to open N64 games) and 4.5mm (to open various game consoles) game bits/security bits.
