I can't think of ANY games (at least Japanese ones) that need the floppy drive. Then again, I'm not an MSX expert and have only gone through a couple MSX systems in my life. I'd say you don't need it.
Unfortunately, I sold all my extra MSX games a few months ago. I think risingstuff usually has a few MSX games. Maybe order a couple, along with some PCE stuff

, and see if they work? It's not like you'd be losing out much if you get some PCE stuff along with a couple MSX games! They should just load automatically if you power the system on with a cart plugged in, if I remember correctly. No "Load, 8, 1" nonsense!
It does appear to power on and display the main screen on the TV, so that's a good sign.
