Isn't this considered one of the most painfully difficult text games ever?

Yes, but this remake is done in a point & click adventure style. There are also two difficulty settings to keep it from being overwhelmingly hard.

December 14th.

Today's Game is...

This game provides proof that a game does not need to have good graphics to be an incredible amount of fun. The graphics are simple. Black and white. No frills. Yet, it's hard to put this game down once you get going. The controls are very intuitive. You'll power up along the way and get new weapons. There is lots to explore. The difficulty ramps up as you play along. It's kind of like a cross between Metroid and Section Z.

I love the aesthetics. Something so appealing about simple monochrome pixels.

The BBC also released a remake of the text-based HHGTTG. Their version has pictures, but still plays as a text controlled game:

December 15th.

I'm up late grading papers and it is officially December 15th now. We are halfway through the month and only about 2 weeks away from Christmas. How about a mid-December double feature?

I was going to save these two as my big Christmas day surprise, but they really should be played now to get you in the mood for the holiday instead of waiting until the day of. So without further ado,

Today's free games are...

and

I hope that a giant exclamation point just sprouted above your head because, yes, these are Christmas themed spoofs of Metal Gear Solid(!). Santa Claus is on a stealth mission to deliver presents without being noticed by children (and what happens when you get caught will have you laughing out loud if you've ever played a Metal Gear Solid game).

Both of these games are totally funny spoofs and actually pretty good takes on the stealth genre. I've played through all of the first one now and part of the second and the story and gameplay pull you right along without getting repetitive and boring. The humor is great, though a lot of it will be lost on you if you aren't somewhat familiar with the source material. Still a fun stealth game either way though. The two games should be played in sequence because the storylines follow each other.

Enjoy! And Merry Christmas! :D  :D

Also, there is a teaser for a 3rd Merry Gear Solid, coming soon.

Tiny and Big is just starting out. It is going to be an episodic set of adventures. As you can see from the images, it's got a lovely cell-shaded art style similar to Borderlands. It also has a storyline that is pants-on-head ridiculous (literally). The main thing that makes this game special though is the primary game mechanic. Much how Narbacular Drop introduced the Portal Gun, Tiny & Big introduces "The Tool" which is used to cleave away gigantic pieces of rock with a laser beam. You can see it in action in this video. The Tool combined with a grappling hook makes the environment around you completely modifiable. The game then sets you up in areas where you have a bunch of stuff in your way as you try to reach your next goal and the puzzle is that you try to find the right way to cut things apart with your trusty laser to get from point A to point B. Since the physics will allow the parts to topple and slide and knock other things over though, you need to plan things carefully before you fire that cliffside destroying gun of yours. It's a really great idea and a lot of fun to play with.

Image

Warning- the download you can play is only a prototype, so the controls are still rough around the edges. While The Tool works pretty well, the jumping leaves a bit to be desired. Pro tip: If you want to jump over a chasm, run and jump (as in most games). If you want to jump up on a step though, that will get you stuck. Instead, jump first to a good height, then push forward. It took me a bit of trial and error to figure that out and I really hope they iron out these kinks as they get further along in development because this game has huge potential.
