It was entertaining to see a game which allowed me to play the Eastern Front, and the Stalingrad level is one of the most memorable areas of any FPS I've ever played. While I'm not very big on vehicle combat, the United Offensive expansion pack did include binoculars, which became the staple weapon with the folks I played with. That was an area in which Call of Duty excelled: it allowed me to melee with everything, be it guns, knives, grenades, or even the binoculars. Playing Pavlov where everyone is trying to beat each other to death is awesome.

In fact, many of my favorite memories of playing FPS multiplayer come from Call of Duty. It was actually the first video game I ever played with Fastbilly back in 2004, as well as many other friends that don't visit this website. The only WWII FPS I played that could really compare for me would have to be Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was entertaining, but it just doesn't have the personal history of these other two.

Oh wait, are we talking about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?
As a guy who also played the series at its origins I share this sentiment. The first Call of Duty for PC absolutely blew me away. Every mission was taken directly out of a WWII movies whether it be Enemy at the Gates, Band of Brothers, the Guns of Navarone, or the Longest Day. This is the first war game that ever fully immersed me into what I perceived as the chaos of war. It stemmed away from the medal of honor formula of being an Audie Murphy-esque kill em all type of invincible super soldier. Instead you played as a soldier a part of a conflict greater than himself. For me this is a huge selling point of the original series that makes it stand out from other FPS's. Not to mention it is a great multiplayer game. Call of Duty/United Offensive is the best in the in series in my opinion.

Halo is good and all but it is just another lone wolf FPS where you take on the bad guys to save the world. :? I feel this way about Half-Life 2 but that is an entirely different subject. Halo's multiplayer is great.

Back to Call of Duty, it is disparaging to throw the entire series under the bus because the series has become a parody of itself. It is amazing to see one of your favorite franchises go from being a "run of the mill" WWII PC shooter to a console juggernaut that is so very polarizing. I guess it must be like this for a fan of Team Fortress or the original grand theft autos.

I have only played either game/series once or twice, but I'm still going to have to go with Halo. It seems to have better local multiplayer, which I prefer. COD is just too realistic for my tastes.

As a guy who started pc gaming on CoD2 i would say it is the best of the series but i do have lots of respect for the first and its expansion united offensive (which was made by treyarch which most cod fans only know for the "bad" call of duty games). CoD was a very important game to pc gaming and the FPS genre as a whole. the main problem with cod these days is the story lines they are good but they are way to short(which in my opinion is big problem in the gaming industry today but that is a different discussion), Hell i remember cod2 and cod1 single players taking a good while to beat and with the newer cods you can blow thru them in one sitting. the console setting isnt a good environment for a competitive shooter like cod being that most of the people are either 20 year old college kids who have way too much time on there hands and play too much and know the game like the back of there hand and dont have much manners , or they are 13 year old kids who are just learning how to cuss and think "teabagging" is the best thing ever.

Halo is a great multiplayer game and the co-op and local play can be the most fun you can have with your friends. the single player on the other is rather boring in my opinion, But don't get me wrong halo is probably one the most well made games this generation. The multiplayer is rather umm boring you just have to run at your target while shooting until you are close enough to get the first bash...but it can also be GREAT fun. Halo is the most important console shooter is made the console shooters what they are today.

All in all i believe that cod is the giant of the two but it all depends what you enjoy. Halo is more of a party game in my opinion and cod is a game that you play in a more competitive setting

I think Halo and COD games are both ok. I had a lot of fun with LAN party Halo and Halo2 (I never played Halos after that). I just beat Halo for the first time yesterday. I didn't really like the single player campaign. It had its moments, but most of it felt really drawn out. I had to force myself to stay awake through the library level.

I've never bothered with COD multiplayer, but I find it enjoyable on the single player (I've only played COD1 on PC, COD2 on PS2, and COD4:MW on PC). I just get annoyed at how I constantly have to find cover and wait for my health to magically get better. It doesn't feel like it adds to the enjoyment or realism of the game. Modern Warfare does do a nice job in the cinematics department though.

I agree with choice C.) Doom.

Here's why:

Yes, but with doom you also had the same stupid question to ask yourself.

I need a key? I have a gun that shoots a localized plasma explosion and could wipe out an entire army, but a need a yellow key if i want to go any farther?

The more games change the more they stay the same. :D

I also hate the fact that CoD has endlessly respawning enemies. What I like to do the most in a FPS game, is to set up traps, bottle necks, get to a great shooting location, and strategically take out the enemies one by one, without me being in any danger.

Well that gets thrown out the Window when the enemy's reinforcements are infinite.

Yeah thats a great point. COD 4 on Veteran was painfull because of that. They took it out for MW2, but they seem to have brought it back for Black Ops.

Call of Duty for me. I am about to buy three more Xboxes for Halo 1 lan ($10 a pop), but nothing in that series comes close to amount of fun Ive had playing CoD1 on lan with my friends. Especially on Pavlov. Ive got so many great stories from killing my friends on that map. Like when I accidentally found a place where you could stand behind the line of explosives and a wall beside the red building and I just sniped from there (it was fixed with a patch). To when United Offensive came out and we learned exactly what a M1919A6 in a window can do, and why you fear the man with binoculars and cant live long enough to issue an air strike.

Base CoD is great fun, UO makes it a top tier game. Still balanced, still fast, and still fun. Just now with bigger maps.

Though I do want to do proper Halo coop:

I feel you here. Especially on veteran. Good grief. I love the veteran difficulty and how fast it goes but when they respawn I can't get any further to a checkpoint. I remember several times giving up after 50 tries on the same level (certain levels, not all) until I felt up to it again. lol

Im not an FPS man, and if I had my way when I play FPS games with my friends, we'd all be enjoying the delights of Turok Rage Wars on N64. Out of the two though, I much prefer halo. Big Halo LAN matches are why. Theres just so much oppurtunity for silliness, something which you cant get in online play - people are too set on winning. In LAN Halo we get to set the gravity to 20% and the health to 20% and have crazy anime style midair floaty punching matches. I can run people over on a spacebike, I can hit them with ridiculous lasers, I can punt them over the horizon with the grav hammer. Thats what makes a fun FPS to me - crazy surreal over-the-top action. Thats why I like rage wars. Nothing is more satisfying than hitting an opponent with the inflator gun so much he literally explodes. Frankly, If I had my way in Halo matches, the assault rifle and battle rifle would be turned off and only the cool weapons would be left on :p
