Downing's 3rd N64p, "The Nimbus II" Complete! Pg. 3!!!!

Post by Downing »

Hey all how's it going?! New to the forum but really wondering why as the amount of great information is incredible! The name is Downing, I've been modding for a little over a year at this point and have been loving every second of it. The new challenges and just the hands on experience is a lot of fun!

I've been keeping work logs on various other sites as well Modded by Bacteria where I am a forum moderator. But I figured I'd introduce myself to the community over here as well and hopefully make some new friends who can guide and/or give advice that would help with the learning experience.

So here is the last post I made a little while ago on the other forums and I'll post a link at the bottom for those who wish to see where it started. Again, I look forward learning and sharing what I know with your community as well!

Alright, well here are some progress photos. The front and back are now roughly sanded and the front filling is done. I just need to hit it with 120, 240 and 480 grit sand paper (maybe even 600) to smooth it out. The back now has two PlayStation controller L and R buttons on the back. Unfortunately this made it a bit thicker than I wanted, but I needed to have the buttons external because there is no room at all for them on the inside and I didn't want to do what I did with the original Nimbus and use the x and O buttons from it.

So tomorrow I should be able hard fill the PS1 buttons and sand them down too and hopefully I'll get a coat or two of paint on before I leave for Florida.

I did notice that when I took the back expansion port off, I accidentally cut through a trace. I'm looking at it and it looks as if it can go to a small cap. Any idea if I need to reroute this or where to reroute it? If you know, please share. Still not that good at tracing traces...don't know why, it sounds so easy.

If I had to venture to guess, it looks like it goes down to the C152 cap and I have no idea what the hell that does or if it's important...I'm guessing it is. Where would be a good place to reconnect it?

Everything filled in nicely.

The back almost complete.

Welcome!

Looks like an interesting mod, I spotted the PSX triggers right away on the portable you're building. Almost panicked seeing the grey color, thought it might have been a gutted DUAL ANALOG. Whew! just a regular PSX controller.

I see the C152 cap connection, does the other side show the trace better?

Welcome aboard. :) Your work looks very nice. I'd love to see the finished project.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Thanks guys! Well the board is double sided so that wouldn't really matter. I didn't cut all the way through the board so everything on the other side is fine. Bac is telling me that it's either 12v line or ground, so I guess it's going to just be trial and error trying to figure out if it works. Multimeter I guess is the best option. We'll see where it leads.

Well it's very diverse, and lots of different projects that aren't just modding! It's refreshing a bit to see new material! Only talked with a couple people so far, but they've been nice and supportive!

Yeah, there's IRC Chat, not well participated but present. Lots of modding information hidden on this forum, check "search" if you need stuff - also, DigitPress is good for that too.

Finally a little bit of progress! Would have made it farther but my heater ran out of propane and I'm broke so I called it a day!

I basically got the fan mounted into the back of my case. Came out almost perfect, but was just a bit off center, but not very noticeable. I'll fill in the edges around it after I'm done painting the case.

Basically to mount this I took 4 little nylon spacers and tapped out a 6-32 hole in them. This allowed me to make actual screw posts so I can lock the fan into place. I found though that super glue and loctite 401 do not like to bond to nylon and HIPS. So, I basically just drilled a hole into the back of the case for the spacer to sit in, dabbed the end in ABS cement and then tacked in tight by melting the edge of the nylon and HIPS with my soldering iron. This locked the spacers right into place and when the ABS cement dries, they won't be going anywhere!

The next step will be fixing the part where the cart slot is. Gotta do a bit of redesign on the internals because my first idea isn't going to work out. But more on that when I get there. Hopefully this sparks a revival of the project!

Looking good. Can you reduce the pics a little, say 700 wide?
A pain to read the descriptions scrolling left to right.

Already did, I noticed that. Some sites automatically reduce them, but it's fixed, 640 x 480!
