Close
Does look like a close fit, isn't the Gameboy Color thinner? Some dense foam in the bottom and back to help the alignment? Maybe a pic of the guts of the Konami Hyper Boy? That is if you don't mind popping the back shell. Well, maybe at least a top back pic looking in without a Gameboy to get an idea of the mechanism and satisfy the curious?
Gutout
Comparing the GB and GBC, the space between the screen and buttons a little different. A gut swap might be possible, headache would be moving the screen up if there is enough lead in the LCD ribbon wire. Not even sure how the GBC LCD is attached internally. The GB buttons seem to match for aligning the GB PCB, its the screen location that will be the major obstacle.
Ultimate
A GBA SP would be the ultimate, a tricky mod to incorporate the internal levers to match up the buttons. Hard wiring in micro switches and a gutted GBA SP PCB could be done. But almost easier to start from scratch going that route though. The GBC seems the easiest best option without cannibalizing this rare controller.
Get the Jack
The AC power mod is somewhat non-intrusive a small hole for the wire-jack. A very easy to mod to save on changing dead batteries all the time. Plus you can maintain battery capability for portability.
