I second the idea that the ABCs should be black.
It looks beautiful. Makes me want to do the same to one of my Mega Drives

Man, that's looking good! Keep it up, can't wait to see how the console turns out. This reminds me of the Gear Gear I just traded for yesterday - custom paint job by the guy I traded with.jeffro11 wrote:Just started on this project of mine... My goal is to paint a Sega Genesis/Megadrive a nice white with a clearcoat. So far I'm using a controller as a test and its turning out very well. I wet sanded the controller earlier today and gave it a nice spray down for a total of 6 coats. Of course I took the controller apart to paint!
So far its just the paint, which needs time to cure before I wet sand again and then apply a clear coat...Which I will then wet sand further for a mirror like finish.
Which leads me to a question regarding the SEGA logo on the controller. Rather, lack thereof... Does anyone have any tips for stencils?

The moment I saw the title of this thread, I knew it would be good.
painting retro Sega hardware white.
Just awesome! good luck. I will be on this thread like .... on a ....
I actually did something else.
You guys know about those usb pc sega saturn pads right? they also work on PS3 and PS1 games, not PS2, grrrr.!
anyway, I have the white one, but that hideous colored buttons. So I swapped the buttons with a pink one, which has gray buttons.
now I have a white with grey buttons saturn usb pad.
I have a pic somewhere, but you get the message.

With 4 layers of clear coat, it would stand up to a three year old with downs.final fight cd wrote:it is a nice paint job and all, but do you think it will hold up to actually game play?
I'm using Krylon Fusion with MANY MANY light coats (people say this stuff sucks, but they just don't know how to paint is all). This took 6.
Currently I'm applying clear to the back side of the controller as a test (lots of work went into the front to prepare it for paint). I plan on doing 3 coats of clear, wet sanding, then one last final coat of clear. On the top coat I will be buffing to a mirror shine with Meguiars.
I probably wont be doing a logo on this controller as I have limited time with this paint or I will have to wait a week before going further. As for the button colors... it will be a surprise.
Thanks for the kind words!

Well the logo would have to go on before the clear coats. Looks great though. Are you gonna make a white system to match?
And Krylon Fusion is amazing. Who ever says it sucks should be shot.

You should do the letters on the buttons, the sega logo and the arrows on the d-pad in red. That would be awesome, it would also match the power light.
I just want to separate the cereal from the mouse mask.

A small update... and a whoopsie...
I started polishing the backside of the controller, but I went through the clear and hit the paint.. which comes off VERY FAST. However, I figured I should post a picture to show you how it will "shine" when complete.
