White Sega Genesis Mod UPDATE - Console Started

Post by jeffro11 »

Just started on this project of mine... My goal is to paint a Sega Genesis/Megadrive a nice white with a clearcoat. So far I'm using a controller as a test and its turning out very well. I wet sanded the controller earlier today and gave it a nice spray down for a total of 6 coats. Of course I took the controller apart to paint!

So far its just the paint, which needs time to cure before I wet sand again and then apply a clear coat...Which I will then wet sand further for a mirror like finish.

Which leads me to a question regarding the SEGA logo on the controller. Rather, lack thereof... Does anyone have any tips for stencils?

That looks great! I really like the black start button in contrast to the abundance of white! Can't wait to see the console itself when this is done! Will look very sharp next to a clean Dreamcast!

Getting some vinyl cut may have better results than trying to stencil. Maybe you could even place it under the clearcoat.
Are you going to try and get white cords for the controllers? I could see it look sharp either way.

Wow, looks really good in comparison to my first attempt at doing a similar project

Any list of items or supplies you used for this?

As for the logo, masking tape is what I suggest when making a stencil. Easiest method I know is to print out a DARK picture of the logo, small enough to cover with tape, the either tape the front or back of the picture, and cut it out with an exacto knife. The tape it simply used to hold the siloette together when you spray over it.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Looks good so far. Make the ABC red again before you clear coat. :)

^I second that. Make the letters red!

Really excited to see what the end product is going to be too. :)

Looking good! When do you think to start on the console itself?

The black button really sticks out nicely from the rest, like others recommended, coloring the letters on the buttons red would give it even a bit more contrast. But doing that makes me think something should be done about the d-pad as well.

Personally I think the ABC letters should be in black to match the start button.

Red on white always looks really horrible imo anyhow.

As far as putting the logos back on, I've looked into this before. I found a product on eBay, it was a type of transfer paper that you could print on with a normal inkjet printer. It was able to transfer onto a few different materials, plastic being one of them. They should some photo examples, one being on a candle, and it looked pretty good. Looked like if you transferred the logo on and then clear coated it would be perfect.

I'm not sure what this type of transfer paper is called, but it does exist, and seems to me like the best way to go. This is what I would use.
