Something interesting:

Codebreaker disc functions, (I use it as boot disc in VGA mode for playing US games). As a result I tested US version of DOA2 (regular disc not as heavy) works fine.

I'll clean the lens tomorrow after work, and let you guys know what the results were. Thank you guys for posting so much info so quickly.

update, DOA2 JP sounds out of balance, now that I checked it in detail. Grinds like hell.

Backups still don't work.

Power issue resolved, bad power cable (don't ask)

Rest of the games work beautifully. Weird.
