My dreamcast stopped reading cd-r's, won't play dead or alive 2, and generally sounds like its having trouble. I'm not sure if its the GD-ROM or powersupply not providing enough power.
Its an imported system, so I kind of don't want to replace it. Ideas?

Re: dreamcast having trouble
Is it a JPN console?
Are you in the USA?
Are you using a step-down/step-up converter?
Do you have a Yamaha or Samsung GD-ROM drive?

Re: dreamcast having trouble
is it just DOA2 having problems booting and others play fine ?
when you try and boot the game from the DC Bios does the CD-R spin or is it not spinning at all ?

Ok, details details
I am in the USA
it is a JP Console
I am NOT using a converter
I'm not sure about the GD-ROM I haven't opened it yet.
DoA2 JP Version is a much heavier disc its the only GD not functioning
it previously played cd-rs, no longer does.
I Have not cleaned the lens, not sure how to without damaging it.

Re: dreamcast having trouble
Dampen a qtip with rubbing alcohol. It should not be dripping, only damp. Lightly drag it across the lens. Don't push down, just a light dragging across it a few times.gennss wrote: I Have not cleaned the lens, not sure how to without damaging it.

Re: dreamcast having trouble
can you check if the CD-R spins when trying to boot DOA2 it can determine if you need to do a POT Calibration or need a new Drive Motor.
Re: dreamcast having trouble
The GD sounds like its having a LOT of trouble with DOA2, the spin down when I open it looks like it was barely spinning at all.
As for the CD-Rs it does spin, but doesn't read. Everything else works more or less fine.

Laser Lens cleaning
Dreamcast POT Calibration

i recommend trying Hobie's Lens clean first and leave a POT Calibration as one of the last things you attempt. Also i have done 2 Calibrations in my time and recommend using a small screwdriver instead of pliers as they are not as precise. And when Calibrating only a small turn is required and then test , a turn about the thickness of a single strand of hair.
