I love the 80's
Re: I love the 80's
I thought this was a topic about the VH1 show of the same title. Anyway, yeah I love the 80s. I'm happy that I fully experienced all but a few months of them. Neon colors, sweatbands, hair metal, Transformers... Awesome!
Re: I love the 80's
Good points. Many of the people here (myself included) can get nostalgic about the 80s not because it was somehow much better than decades before/after but because we were kids. When you are a kid, you don't have responsibilities, don't usually worry much about current events, and think that your entertainment is the pinnacle of human expression. I've had students defend the pop culture of the 90s (their childhood) with the same fervor that people here are defending the 80s, and we all probably have parents or grandparents who tell us how much simpler/better things were when they were kids.Yiddishpilot wrote:As a minority everything was worse for me in the 80's, oh and all the fear about aids, and all the fist fighting because I was a "waver" (I liked the smiths, and the cure and I'm not even sure they could be considered new wave bands), and the cold war....the 80's sucked!
Truth be told, it is all just a bunch of nostalgia.

Re: I love the 80's
Years, especially formative ones, are always remembered more fondly than the present in most cases. Really, pop culture is cyclical, instead of Madonna we have Kesha, so on and so forth. The times don't necessarily change, but the people do. A thirty year old now views things the way a thirty year old would have viewed them in the 80s (normally). I enjoyed my formative years, but I do not want to go back.
I just want to separate the cereal from the mouse mask.

Hm. The 80's reminds me of the crack and aids epidemic. Oh, and mohawks. Lots of mohawks.

Worst music ever, worst music production ever, no videogames here at spain (i got my nes on 1992!), horrible clothing, cold war on tv, lame rollerblading... no thanks

Sure, some of it could be chalked up to nostalgia. As far as things being cyclical I would have to disagree. Sure anyone can look back fondly on their childhood days (at least those fortunate enough to have a good childhood) but there have been major changes to the world between the 90's and now that are more significant to the way we live our lives and the general environment we are surrounded in than anything from many decades previous. Arguably the changes have been more drastic than any other era. Having a world of information at your fingertips at any time is a great thing for the most part but it certainly changes our world. Much of the nostalgia for "simpler" times is because they actually were quite a bit simpler for everyone. That is a whole different conversation but I think that anyone would be hard pressed to say that the 80's wasn't an end to an era.
Of course the music, clothing, etc is just a matter of taste.

Re: I love the 80's
The only two things I remember liking were the Music (punk/new wave, hardcore, electronic, hip hop) and video games. I can say great things about music from any generation though. Most of my favorite games came out in the late 80's / early 90's.
Otherwise I would agree that the 80's sucked.

This is one of the most false statements ever made. I can understand if you don't like the genres, but production? Ever since digital compression came out the production of music has gone to shit. Everything is now over-processed midrange bullshit. Analog anyday (and this is not because of nostalgia).Luke wrote:Fickieboy wrote:Worst music ever, worst music production ever...

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
