Thanks JT and GSZX1337! I'm a console man so I'll be on PS2 and suffer the rendered graphics.

On PC there are also the Opposing Force and Blue Shift expansions which are good. Not as good as the main game, but still worth playing and you see glimpses of the other bits which is fun.

I think at this point Gabe and his cronies (or developers, replace according to your bias) are struggling to tie up all the loose ends created by the canonical mess that is the Half-Life franchise. Don't get me wrong I love HL1+2 but unless Gabe is shooting for a world record in cliffhangers I don't think all this fanfare is warranted. If Ep 3 comes fine if not the world will still be here.

IIRC, the story is already worked out as there's some sort of "Half-Life Bible" at Valve HQ.

Half Life - Awesome
Opposing Force - Really good
Blue Shift - Pretty good and upgrades models and textures for the original game and OpFor

So best to just buy all 3 at the same time, like one of these:
