2nd Chrono trigger (snes)

Baldur's Gate (I'm treating both games and their expansions as one over-arching story, which they were), and Planescape: Torment were top notch in the story department. The Shin Megami Tensei games on the PS2 were nice too.

Xenogears.

Not only does it have the best story in an RPG that I've ever played, it has the best story out of any game I've ever played. (I've beat around like 300 - 500 games in my 21 years of life.... not trying to brag, just trying to point out how good i think this games story is)

I've beaten 95% of the games posted in this thread, and no offense to anyones opinion but xenogears story beats these games out ten fold (granted story is more of an opinion thing).

Final Fantasy IV.

I really got into the story and wanted to kick Kain's Dragoon ass on more than one occasion. I also cried when the twins...

It's interesting to see this thread rise up from the dead. At the time it was first posted, I was guilty of not giving Western RPGs a chance. Since then, gog.com has re-released many of the WRPG titles that people are discussing: Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Betrayal at Krondor, Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, Fallout 1 & 2, and more.

I've finally tried a few of these games and I must say that I am really quite impressed with the writing. The distinction someone made between JRPGs being good at plot and WRPGs being good at dialogue & writing seems to fit in my experience.

I hold the Shin Megami Tensei games in the highest regard for their plot and atmosphere (especially Nocturne), but I'm finding that I love the witty dialogue of D&D games like Planescape: Torment.

I always enjoyed the story behind Dragon Warrior IV for nes. The fact that there are so many characters that you meet, whilst playing 7 different chapters and they come together in the last to span an entire globe.....

Great game and great game play...
