SNES vs SuperFamicom
Re: SNES vs SuperFamicom
I choose the SuperFamicom one since it's the same design as the PAL SNES, colored buttons on the controller and everything... I never had a PAL snes myself growing up but I do remember the pretty colored buttons when playing it in a gameshop. As you guys already said, it's an image that got stuck in your mind, the only difference here is that it's the PAL design that I remember from my childhood.

Re: SNES vs SuperFamicom
I prefer the mini SNES...I can't choose that option though. The SuperFC is really cool looking, but I really like the grey and two-tone purple look of the US version.
Someone called it a tank, and funny enough, I'm pretty sure I read that the guy who designed the original 'toaster' style NES also was the designer of the US SNES and I've always thought that was pretty cool. Or at least a pretty cool job, if you ask me.

Re: SNES vs SuperFamicom
I've always preferred the SFC design over the SNES design. The purple and how boxy it is has always been kind of a turn off to me in comparison to the sleek look of the SFC.

SFAM here as well. i recently picked one up over a US console and decided to widen the cartridge slot a bit. even with that little modification, it's much nicer than the US machine. :]
Re: SNES vs SuperFamicom
Was there a particular reason why the US/Canada got the funkodelic model instead of the standard design? I know the whole point behind the toaster NES was to avoid comparisons to the failed game consoles of the crash - Was 'The Color Purple' number one in theaters and Nintendo saw an opportunity?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Purple stands for royalty. And that is exactly what Nintendo was in the late 80s and early 90s.

I've heard it had something to do with FCC regulations but I can't verify it with a source.
EDIT: I can't find anything to support this after doing some research, but I did find this much:
Nintendo Wiki wrote:Interestingly, the Japanese branch of Nintendo did not design the American Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Instead, a man by the name of Lance Barr designed the hardware (he also designed the NES). Lance Barr explained that he didn't like the look of the Super Famicom, saying that it was too "soft and had no edge". Nintendo Power revealed several unused designs that were drawn by Barr, all of which led to the final creation. Barr explained that he designed the Super Famicom in a way so that drinks could not placed on it, and that the indention in the X and Y buttons were made so that players could tell the difference between them and the A and B buttons.
Re: SNES vs SuperFamicom
I think both versions look very good in their own ways. but I have to choose PAL Super NES because it's sleeker and I grew up with it. It just looked so powerfull back then.
Damn, I miss those cartridge-based-toaster console designs
