I love a bit of Ikaruga. It took me weeks on the easy setting to get right through to the end. Still can't do it on hard, and as for 1cc-ing it, there's no chance. I'm also very fond of any of the Parodius stuff on the Saturn

anyone who reads the shmups section knows i sang praises of fire shark for sega genesis. as great as it is, i haven't played it in a long time since i keep getting new games in trades/ebay purchases. soooooo, now my favorite currently is m.u.s.h.a.! it's another vertical scroller, with a cool weapon system, explosions everywhere, and bullet hell!

other recent (side-scrolling) shooters i've been enjoying are air buster (this game is so fun, it really has the arcade feel because it's a port) and to a lesser degree, gaiares

GOOD STUFF

If you like Air Buster, give Aero Blasters on the TG-16 a go. Same game, but it feels a little nicer to me. And there's new music on one of the stages.

Tyrian is by far my favourite 2D shooter. Excellent graphics, music, sound and gameplay. I still love to play this in DOSBox :)

I really enjoyed the touhou games, very hard and basic gameplay and a most awesome soundtrack that has inspired many japanese musicians!

Some others I like alot are Toaplan's shmups, Darius series, rrootage, zero gunner 2, the cotton series and dodonpachi & ikaruga.
