What truly new genres developed in the last 10 years?

That's a good choice. There was Body Harvest in 1998, but things didn't really come together in this genre until Grand Theft Auto III came out in 2001.

What about GTA and GTA2? Some would argue 2 was the best in the series to date?

Perhaps cover shooters?

I'd like to say the stealth genre because it has gone through a lot of developments recently but Metal Gear came out in the 80's so never mind...

I agree that the sandbox genre, if we can even call it that, is the most notable new genre of the past few years. As for others......

Survival Action? Like Resident Evil 4 and 5 maybe?

I don't view Guitar Hero as anything more than another bemani game, which have been part of the industry for a long time.

While it's not a genre, this generation of consoles has focused on multi-player games more than any other

What genre would Viva Pinata be considered a part of? I love that game

Patapon? Rhythm role playing game?

With Hotel Dusk on the DS, are pick your own adventure titles becoming more than just a niche Japanese thing?

What about the bunch of PC style adventure games we're seeing on portables and download services. It's not a new genre to PC gamers, but certainly not one that we saw much of on consoles until recently

Should we consider exercise games a genre now?(like the Wii balance board and Wii Fit thing)

It seems like the industry today focuses much more on FUSING genres than creating new ones. Can you think of many modern games that focuses purely on just one type of gameplay. I think that's a difficult task

Mini-game compilations?

I think you are right though, most of the innovative game that have been produced in the last 10 years are refinements of an old genre or 2 old genres mashed together in a pleasing way.

I wonder about this sometimes. I keep coming back to just one answer: Tower Defense.

I thought about Hotel Dusk, also. Even though, generally speaking, it's probably considered a 'text adventure' (which have been around for years) it's also got several things like exploration, interrogation, puzzles, and touch-screen elements that make it more of an interactive mystery novel. It's like the perfect mix between book and video game, which most text adventures are not.

Agreed. The first thing that came to mind when reading this post was the WarioWare series.
